87 in a 70

me and my wife

Driving on an interstate near Spartanburg, SC. A group of about 10 or so cars (including me) had banned together and we were all doing 85-95mph. Since I wasn't at the very front or back of the group, figured if anyone got pulled over it wouldn't be me.

Wrong.

He wasn't up for any chit-chat either. He came up to my window, asked for license and registration and returned to his car quite quickly. Came back after a few minutes told me he clocked me doing 87 but wrote the ticket for 79 and tossed everything through my window at me and quickly walked back to his car. I didn't get a chance to say a thing. Oh well, I took the 79 and just paid the fine. Guess he was trying to meet quota or something

just got a citation for running a red light in Cary in the mail, well, it came in the mail to my dad's house back in January

I had changed my address when I renewed my license in December to my Raleigh address.

looked it up online and the video was more than 120 days old, so it was no longer available

Eh, I don't really have any good stories, but plenty of citations:

charge: 55 in a 35 on Carmel Road in Charlotte, reduced to 49 in a 35
age: 16
vehicle: Volvo 850 station wagon

charge: 69 in a 55 on some state road in western VA, no reduction
age: 21
vehicle: Mazda Millennia

charge: reckless driving - spinning tires through intersection & excessive acceleration. Wasn't speeding though
age: 20
vehicle: Honda Prelude

charge: 55 in a 40 on Centennial Campus, reduced to 9 over by the ADA
age: 23
vehicle: Acura Integra

charge: 80 in a 65 on I-85 S in VA, no reduction
age: 26
vehicle: Acura Integra

charge: 81 in a 70 ( ), no reduction
age: 30
vehicle: Honda S2000

Never had more than 2 points on my license though, and it is currently clean

Many lawyers contacted me after the accident. Should I ask a lawyer to deal with my case? My insurance may increase a lot right?

shoot, go to court and talk to the assistant district attorney (ADA). Ask to have the ticket reduced to 9 over (if this is your first offense they will probably do it). One ticket on your record for 9 over the speed limit has no impact on your automobile insurance. If the ADA will not reduce the ticket ask for a continuance and hire a lawyer to get the ticket reduced. Paying a lawyer a few hundred dollars up front is way better than 3 years of increased insurance costs.

Only ticket:

Driving left of center (i was going 56 in a 45).
Unmarked car following me
Dodge Dakota
Rural highway
Ticket (reduced later to improper equipment)
Johnston Co.
White
16 or 17 at the time
none

I was coming home from a friends house late at night on a poorly lit road. It's a winding, curving, fairly narrow road. I didn't realize it was an unmarked car behind me, but he was tailgating me hard. So I sped up a little to get the car off my ass (again, didn't know it was a cop) and I came around a sharp curve...crossed the center line in the process. Not sure why he gave me a left-of-center ticket instead of a speeding ticket. I barely crossed the center line and it was a pretty sharp curve...it's not like I was on a straightaway or anything. The fact that he was tailgating me so badly (even before I was speeding...I started speeding to get him off my ass) makes me think he was running my plates and then just looking for a reason to pull me. Lawyer got it reduced to improper equipment. I wanted to ask him why he didn't give me a speeding ticket...but I didn't wanna say anything else to the cop lol...I was only 16 or 17.

That's the only time I've ever been pulled.

not speeding (well, sort of), but there is a stretch of Virginia Ave in ATL that connects two popular bar areas and cops have been out full force the last 2 months along that stretch. I was pulled three weekends in a row. Two of the times I hadnt had a drop and they claimed they pulled me for a rolling stop. First time I was guilty, second time they just pulled me to pull me. Didnt get a ticket either time.

One time though I had a few adult beverages with some friends beforehand, nothing crazy, but like 4-5 beers and 2 shots over 4 hours or so. Knew I was fine so I got out did the tests, then he asked me to blow (thats what she said) and I blew a .04... then the guy saw my UT licence plate so we chit chatted about Dooley for 20 minutes (he was a UGA fan). He admitted he had pulled me for going 2mph over the limit , not ticket.

I'm fairly certain 9 over doesn't hurt insurance, since I got 12 reduced to 9 so that it wouldn't hurt at all

It looks like the points don't apply for some of the minor speeding infractions if you've only had one moving violation within a three year period. But then if you got another moving violation I think the points would kick-in retroactively.

^^^^^ Correct; in NC, a conviction of 9-over results in 2 insurance points (not to be confused with license points). All companies are regulated by law to not raise your rates for less than 3 total insurance points. Therefore, a single 9-over conviction within a 3-year period doesn't affect your rates. If you get any other moving violation within a 3-year period, you will then break that 3-insurance point threshold and be charged for both of them (i.e., if you get two 9-over tickets within a 3-year period, your rates will increase to reflect your total of 4 insurance points. If you get a 9-over and, say, a 15-over, I believe that would be a total of 5 insurance points, and your rates will increase slightly more.)

If you got, say, a 15-over ticket, then a year later got a 9-over ticket, you would only then have to wait 2 more years for your rates to go back to "normal" (assuming no other infractions)--the 15-over ticket would not be chargeable after 3-years, and the single 9-over ticket would be non-chargeable because you would be below the 3-total point threshold.

Cop pulled out in front of me, plugging away at about 75. I sped up a bit, but he was still slowly pulling away from me. He then slammed on brakes and pulled onto the shoulder, I slowed down and drove by, he pulled back out behind me and pulled me over.

Ended up going to court, was essentially just the Asst. DA sitting at a desk reducing tickets to 9 over. All they care about is the money.

I've only been pulled over once as the driver.

42 in a 25
radar
88 Ford Bronco II

Basically I was on my way home from school. I left early because I had the flu, and had thrown up in school. Unfortunately, on my way home, my stomach started telling me that it was about to come out the other end. Being less than a mile from home, and thus, a toilet, I went as fast as I could while still trying to be reasonable about it. When I saw the lights behind me, it just made things twice as bad. I literally thought I was going to shit my pants. I was making exit strategies to just hop out, drop trow, and make ass gravy all over the pavement. The cop luckily hurried up in approaching my vehicle, at which point he noticed that a) I was pale as a ghost, b) I was sweating profusely. Before he said much of anything, I held up my ID and said "Officer if you have to give me a ticket I completely understand but please follow me to my house and do it there so that I can get to a bathroom!"

He shook his head and said "where do you live?" At which point I told him, "three blocks, I promise."

He told me he was going to follow me there to make sure I wasn't shitting him (pun fully intended, I suppose). Off we went. I got out of my car, made a b-line for the bathroom, and when I came out (feeling much better, I might add), the cop was nowhere to be found.

Interestingly enough, about a week later there was a knock at the door. My Dad answered, and it was the cop. He was off duty, and he had his rod with him. He was asking permission to fish the lake on our property. He did, and caught the largest bass (about a 12 pounder) that ever came out of that lake.

True statement. Wake County hasn't done improper equipment in at least 10 years. I don't know how much longer before that.

Improper eq is a non-moving violation--it's more akin to a parking violation or some other city code violation. Certain things, I believe, can be written up as either moving or non-moving. Other times, they'll reduce moving violations to non-moving stuff even if weren't doing the non-moving violation.

People have this idea that they need to prove their speedometer was off or something to get the improper equipment, but usually that has nothing to do with it. It's just a catch-all non-moving violation that they can give you where you don't get insurance/license points, they make a quick buck and move on to the next case, and the lawyers cash in a little. Everyone is, if not happy, at least able to live with the outcome.

Hell, I've actually gotten a big speeding ticket reduced to a seatbelt ticket, even though I had my seatbelt on. Nobody gives a shit, it's not about justice or upholding the law or whatever...it's a money-making operation.

Pulled over: 10; Speeding Tickets: 4; Seatbelt Tickets: 1; Expired Registration Tickets: 1; Warnings: 2

~60 in a 45 on High Point Road in Greensboro, Guilford County Sheriff
Age: 17, Vehicle: 1979 Chevy Malibu
Result: Nothing, really. Before the cop even got out of his car, he put it back in gear, rolled back up alongside me, shouted out his window "got another call, you're free to go" and sped off.

~51 in a 35, Greensboro (forget what street now), Greensboro PD
Age: 17, Vehicle: 1979 Chevy Malibu
Result: Verbal Warning. He mentioned that because I hadn't had a ticket before he'd let me off.

80 in a 65, I-40 East in Orange County, NC Highway Patrol
Age: 18, Vehicle: 1979 Chevy Malibu
Result: Seatbelt ticket. I was wearing my belt, but the trooper told me that because I hadn't had a ticket before, he'd change it to something that wouldn't raise my insurance. I thanked him.

51 in a 35, Buck Jones Road, Raleigh PD
Age: 25, Vehicle: 1996 Lincoln Mark VIII
Result: Citation. Reduced to 44 in a 35.

62 in a 45, 401/70 North, Raleigh PD
Age: 26, Vehicle: 2003 Mercury Marauder
Result: Citation. Reduced to 54 in a 45. Stupid to not get a lawyer for this one as my insurance went up with 2 9-overs in 13 months.

Exipred Registration, Avent Ferry Road, Raleigh PD
Age: 28, Vehicle: 2003 Mercury Marauder
Result: Citation. Thrown Out after I got the car inspected & updated the registration.

81 in a 65, I-40 East in Wake County, NC Highway Patrol
Age: 28, Vehicle: 2003 Mercury Marauder
Result: Citation. PFJC filed to keep off record.

Pulled over from a stoplight @ intersection of Kent & Western, Raleigh PD
Age: 29, Vehicle: 2003 Mercury Marauder
Result: Nothing. Officer explained that she ran my plate while at the light and it was flagged as stolen, but she realized she had entered one of the numbers wrong. She apologized.

Expired Registration, Merrie Road, Raleigh PD
Age: 30, Vehicle: 2003 Mercury Marauder
Result: Written Warning

77 in a 60, Wade Avenue, Raleigh PD Motorcycle Unit
Age: 30, Vehicle: 2003 Mercury Marauder
Result: James Crouch

I forgot about that one. WCSD asked me if my car was running ok after I crossed 401/Fayetteville Rd. on 10-10 Rd. going 45 in a 45. I guess he didn't like the fact that the lanes were wavy and my car bumped going through the intersection. He followed us almost all the way up Lake Wheeler before pulling us.

I also got an expired registration and inspection ticket in Goldsboro 4th of July weekend 2 years ago. I got it tossed after I showed the DA proof of correction.

It is when it's in the country and the cop works at the same skating rink as you do.

Check out this wikipedia article, especially the third paragraph. Basically, we were in the rural south, the cop knew me, and he didn't give me a ticket because he liked me.
