I really enjoyed the Power Plant area. Had a great birthday party at Chico's for my 25th, and loved to walk around City Lake early in the mornings. That stopped after that horrible murder at the church next to it, though.

I visited Rocky Mount every few months for a few decades... only place I ever remember eating is Gardner's BBQ. And the Carlton House. (I went with my grandparents, they didn't like to mix-it-up too much)

[Edited on April 26, 2012 at 11:05 AM. Reason : also, didn't the restraunt at the powerplant use to be a seafood place in the mid-80s?]

La Perla is pretty good. It's in the Harris Teeter shopping center off of sunset.

All in all, I second the sentiment that RM is a dump

i worked at bob melton's back in the day. that job ruled-- doing pig pickins for rich drunk fuckers who gave us free beer and huge tips was a 15-18 year old's dream.

Police said Carlos Whitaker opened fire at Westridge Grill shortly after 11:30 a.m. Cynthia Jeanette Joyner, 41, died of wounds at the scene.

Police found the body of Whitaker behind the shopping center a short while later. Police say they suspect Whitaker died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after fleeing from the scene on foot after the initial shooting. "

The house my parents moved to when I was 10 is about a mile from there. I've spent hundreds of hours loitering around that shopping center and skateboarding behind the Harris Teeter.

I really wish I had the foresight to record those Golden East Mall Christmas commericials that came on every year for about a decade. It was always the same 3 commercials, with the same music, back to back to back featuring the groundbreaking NES system as late as about 1998 or so.

^^My great aunt still lives on Winstead Rd just off Winstead Ave. And my great-grandparents had a farm on Sunset where Kandemor Lane is at now. Grandma grew up there and I used to spend a shitload of time out there as they were alive until I was like 10 or 11. They tore it down after they both died and built a neighborhood on the property. So yea I used to hang out that way a lot. That was the first HT I ever went to.

Small world...My neighborhood was unofficially connected to Kandemor by a dirt trail that I rode my BMX bike down many times on my way to Candlewood. Around the time I got my driver's license it became a muddy road (which was also great fun!) and eventually it was paved and became a real road.

That's one reason I don't open carry.

This is a good example of brandishing a weapon that you aren't prepared to or aren't capable of using.

Yeah, Rocky Mount isn't the best place to live, but it's still better than southern kalifornia.

Thought I would post this in here, because of the topic of conversation. As I said I still have lots of family in the Rocky Mount area (way more than just my great-aunt near HT) and a distant in-law that is about the same age as me posted this on FB:

Quote :
"Sooo I'm a lil bothered by folks posting.. I understand there was another shooting in RM, and suddenly everyone starts posting "time to move".. my question- to where? A place with zero crime? Good luck with that! We live in a cruel evil world, we have pushed God from it so much yet we want it to be ok. What we need to be doing is praying! Praying for God's help and hand over all this violence! Crime is everywhere because our society has tols God he's not welcome everywhere...What do you expect?"

I understand that the glass is always half empty if you are an end times, doom and gloom kind of Christian (I am Christian, but I still see a whole lot of good in this world), but to answer her question about where to move, throw a fucking dart at the map and you are 98% likely to find a town with less crime than Rocky Mount. Big surprise, she has never lived anywhere else.

drove past lumberton on my way back from florida. real shithole. full of pretendians that are genuine alcoholic meth heads.

If you had to choose one place to live, which would it be? Rocky Mount or Lumberton?

Yes...Just move to Rocky Mount and they'll handle the rest.

I really don't think RM is that bad of a place. It just seems to have a ton of bad people. I thoroughly enjoyed most of my time growing up there. Met a lot of great people who I still keep in touch with to this day and had a lot of fun in that town despite all the b.s. that it is known for.

Not going to happen. I don't know a single person who even entertains the thought of going back and most of the people I know who still live there talk about how badly they want to leave.

The city council is currently doing their best to strip what little wealth is left in that town. My prediction is that it will be even more like Detroit in terms of abandonment and crime before it ever gets any better. I think an actual rock bottom is in its future before there will be any change there.

But hey, the City Council wants to spend millions on a convention center despite the fact that their own feasibility studies show it cannot possibly generate enough revenue to come close to breaking even (I don't have time to look up the numbers, but it is expected to lose several hundred thousand dollars per year IIRC.) IIRC they want to pay for it by selling bonds. Bonds that they expect to pay back via property taxes....In a town where property values and population is on the decline. The leadership there is a mess.

Railroads, textiles, and tobacco were the industries that built RM for the most part.

rockingham was textiles. you can drive through the part of town that used to house all the mill workers. tons of tiny houses packed together. they're all crack/meth houses now.

i think lumberton had some big tobacco warehouses. not sure what else propped them up for so long.

so what did these towns do different from places like wilson, nc? wilson was a tobacco town, but they seem to have adapted to that loss and are doing pretty well.

^^the difference is Ahoskie has never been anything. it's always been a dinky little shithole. these other towns actually had something going for them for a while, but fell by the wayside.

Wilson has Firestone. It employees about half the town and other half has old tobacco money their great grandparents made so they are living off that. More money in Wilson than you think.

I work in rocky mount and live in zebulon. When people say "man i bet you hate that drive" i counter with "i bet you hate living here". Always a win.

i don't buy that at all. i feel like the portion of the population there living off tobacco fortunes is pretty small.

I spent a lot of time around both and they are both shitholes. Living in Halifax County I remember when "going shopping" meant heading to Rocky Mount. The only people that are interested in moving to somewhere like Wilson or Rocky Mount are the people stuck in even shittier places like Ahoskie, Roanoke Rapids or pretty much anywhere in Eastern NC not on the beach.

Ask me how much fun it is to own a home in southeastern Halifax County and three years later I am still in a fucking apartment in Chapel Hill. Gigantic houses that old people die in are going on the market all the time, so nobody wants a nice little fixed up home that is 1500 sq.ft. when they can get a dilapidated house that is 3x as big for the same price but hasn't been updated since the 70's.
