So it looks like part of the problem was that this was a densely built neighborhood and a collapse/cave-in for such a deep excavation could have damaged surrounding inhabited structures. The SWAT team does sound excessive, but I would understand the inspector or assisting officer calling the bomb squad when the saw the gernades - if they didn't feel they could be sure whether or not they were inert.
I guess part of the lesson is if you want to dig out a paranoia cave below your house without having to have it permitted (as say a root celler) and up to code, then don't dig out a potentially house-swallowing hole in a dense neighborhood with close property lines. 5/10/2012 5:52:47 PM
