Of places I've been that were sizable cities, Birmingham was by far the worst.

That's because Fredericksburg is a great place to live.

Definitely going with Lumberton here.

Out of "major" cities, I couldn't live in NYC, Louisville is awful, and I'm not a fan of DC.

ncsuallday, which part of Bham did you see? Because if you went for the Papa Johns Bowl and only stayed close to Legion Field, then yeah you saw the shittiest part. Otherwise, you were missing out

Pittsburgh, PA
Cleveland, OH
Detroit, MI
Rochester, NY
etc.

Just about any grey, miserable northern great lakes city. The only possible exception being Chicago, but only because it actually has a lot going on there, even still I'd have to get a pretty exceptional job offer to move there.

My answer is anywhere too far south. I can't take the heat.

You couldn't pay me enough to live anywhere in CA right now. I wouldn't mind visiting some places, but I wouldn't want to be living there with their financial meltdown they're having.

Did I just use all three "there"s correctly in one sentence or did I screw it up?

I was already familiar with the studies.

As far as:
1) job opportunities
2) decent real estate markets
3) 5 star public school districts
4) quality universities
5) cultural and entertainment value
6) affluent suburbs

...the rest of the country cannot compete with the north east's corridor metropolitan areas of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington DC.

It's also difficult to compete with the level of population density, pollution, and generally unpleasant populace.

I feel like a more correct statement would have been "with the financial meltdown they're having"

but it was fun nonetheless

Why specifically? I've lived here for 7 years and enjoyed it for the most part. I'm definitely ready to leave though. I'll be moving to Portland, OR in three months. Definitely a step up...
