In this case, the shield idea is probably the best. Take two of the diagonally opposing fields and turn them into negative for a more dramatic effect. Pick a font that is epic and timeless but not too corny or hard to read.

I actually had them customize the text to make it appear the way it does.
The best part is that it looks like generic text (IMO).
