Coming out isn't as bad as going in. My doc was talking to me and suddenly popped it out. I thought she yanked out my tonsils. It was so unexpected that it sucked all of the air from my lungs, but it really was like ripping off a bandaide. It was out and that was it.

My wife has had Mirena for over a year now. Best BC so far! Insurance covered most of the cost but still had to pay $180 out of pocket. I can feel the string sometimes, just depends on the position. It's way better then the ring or the pill. Condoms just plain suck but we all know that. Bustin in the vag on the reg for a long time now with no issues.

Whoever invented the IUD should be given the Nobel Peace Prize or something. I can't understand for the life of me why they aren't the go-to BC method.

Because if you're having sex without protection with multiple partners and only relying on the IUD, it puts you at high risk for contracting an STD. And because of the IUD, you're at higher risk for a pelvic infection that can render you permanently sterile.

A big part of the reason that IUDs are not as popular here as they are in Europe is the legacy of the Dalkon Shield which was introduced to the US in the 70s. The design was very bad because the strings were porous multi-filaments and would wick bacteria from the vagina on them, which would then be transferred to the other end in the uterus. The company knew about the risks but marched ahead anyways, and hide the dangers. They were not explained in ads for it and many women suffered PIDs, ectopic pregnancies, sepsis, abortions, etc. etc. The legacy of this killed IUDs in the US, especially with the availability and ease of taking the pill. So many women avoided IUDs in the 70s, and moms who grew up in that time were obviously hesitant to recommend this to their daugthers.

But yea once you've had a kid and are with a sole partner where you don't have to worry about STD transmission the IUD is the greatest thing ever.

Also, I think single women should consider them too. If you're dating around you'll be using a condom anyway (I hope) to avoid STD risk, but also having an IUD would mean you're less likely to "oops" with someone you just started seeing.

I also think about how this would take away wonen's ability to "forget" a pill and trap a dude with a kid. Which is pretty much the most despicable thing I can think of, yet it's all too common.

Well several things I had read and the OB/GYN she uses said it was easier for women who have had a kid, but can be a lot more painful if you have not. Again, not saying that it is not an option for them, but its absolutely fantastic for us. Only thing easier would be if one of us got snipped.

When my doctor was putting mine in she was telling me a story about how they have found very early IUDs in mummies. They were metal objects- mostly ring shaped back then. She said they used to put them in during right after the woman gave birth.

I don't like the idea of them because they can cause weird side effects, and they are semi-permanent.

If I start going nuts, I want the relief to be as immediate as possible.

Also, [user]Swinkle[/user] is crazy! I'm not going through a painful procedure just to reassure a person that I won't try to "trap him" with a baby. There are plenty of steps that he can take if he's so worried about that. Just like the ladies can take their steps to avoid getting trapped into motherhood.

I dated a girl with an IUD for a while ... I was CONSTANTLY terrified the string would get caught on my genital piercing ... luckily never did

That is the worst reasoning against getting an IUD ever. It takes several days for the pills to get out of your system, but if the IUD bothers you then your doc can yank it the same day. I have had problems with all the pills and there is no instant relief from that.

Only reason I never tried one is because I was having surgery anyway so while I was open I made them snip me. Best decision ever.

It's just a pain in the butt cause you can never be sure what's causing your symptoms, and then you have to weigh everything out before you decide what to do about it.

Also, you're the only one who goes to the doctor for same-day services. The rest of us make appointments. I'm not trying to be mean about it...you are just a bit pushier than your average person, you know.

I took it to mean that she got an IUD to prevent pregnancy, and specifically to keep a pregnancy from happening early on in a relationship.

She didn't say anything about assuring the guy it wouldn't happen, but just preventing an "oops" moment anyways.

That there are a lot of skanky bitches out there who DO trap men into having kids by oops-ing on purpose, and if IUDs became more commonly used that would reduce those instances. And yes, I realize the type of people who would do that would probably never actually get one in the first place, but this is the ideal world in my head where it's the go-to form of BC.

I got mine like two weeks after I started dating my current boyfriend. I was single at the time I planned to get it. I wanted it for ME, because I really don't want to end up knocked up before I intend to.

It was really painful. I thought I was going to throw up and got really pale. The nurses and doctors were concerned. I had to get another ultrasound to make sure the uterus wasn't perforated because I jumped when she finally got it past my cervix. I would say the intensity of the pain was pretty similar to when I was hiking in the mountains and dislocated my shoulder. Good thing I only have to do this every 5 years.

Today I feel fine though and have no cramping.

^^^^Hence why again they say it is easier for women who have had kids, because it is not nearly as painful for them.

Of course that fades with time. The first time my wife got it, a few months after our second kid was born, she thought it was nothing. Still not comfortable for a couple days. This time it was a quite a bit more painful for her, but she did not get as bad off as you did. But she had a very uncomfortable few days after the swap out and then was all cool again.

It's too bad you have a shitty doctor that doesn't take you seriously when you say you are in pain.

I wouldn't make a doc fit me in if I decided I wanted the IUD out because it was slightly annoying, but if it was causing me a lot of pain then yes it would be out ASAP. My gyno knows I have a high pain tolerance, and I wouldn't BS about something like that.

And I, too, had a lot of pain. My doctor told me I was the star patient of the day because of the pain I went through. :/ Long story short, it was almost not feasible.

ANYWAY, I also came in here to say we recently had a woman who was pregnant and had an IUD. We just watched it really closely.

Yeah, doctor also praised me for being tuff because I didn't pass out. I told Peter we are having a kid in 5 years.


I still haven't received a bill but my insurance said it's going to be around $500. I have pretty shitty insurance through.


I have random panic attacks where I think "holy fuck, I haven't taken my bc in forever". it's awesome not having to take a pill every day, but hard for me to get used to it.

Mine hurt going in mainly because my cervix wasn't cooperating and they had to clamp it. Kept it in all five years, but took it out and went back on the pill last year. It can cause some unwanted symptoms in women with PCOS and I was experiencing some of them .
