Maybe not. Dude parked at the back of the theater and busted into the emergency exit. He never went through the front door. So that shit could have all been in place and it would not have changed a damn thing. Unless a police officer was standing in the theater, when he broke in the door and was rocking a gas mask, I don't think anything could have stopped this.

^^that depends on your particular situation. if he's in the front and there's a bunch of chaos, then people in the back should certainly run. However, everyone starts running, and all of a sudden you're standing there, now being an even larger target (1) because you're standing, providing more target space on yourself (2) you're likely in a large group, so now the shooter can just spray and not worry about praying, because he's certainly hitting someone.

If you're feet away from the guy, then running would likely be death. Fighting back seems like a better route.

Another assumption that I always made was that emergency doors open out of the building, not in. Kind of flies in the face of the report that says the door was kicked in. Maybe I'm wrong on the door direction?

Some chick they were interviewing on NPR claimed she was sitting in the very back of the theater because she arrived late and she saw the guy walk past her as he entered the theater. Assumed he was just some guy in costume until he opened fire. So yeah, it looks like the reporters have no idea what they're talking about with this emergency exit nonsense.

reports I've been hearing (Today show) is it is presumed the guy actually had a ticket to the movie, rigged the door, left and then entered through the emergency exit. one of their callers was sitting on the 2nd row when he came in and tossed the tear gas/smoke bomb upon entering.

^^^Not a bad plan. Most folks probably wouldn't notice, esp. if he got in early and just stuck a door stopper in the exit or something. Then stroll out, get your gear out of the car and enter through the "secure" door. Quite clever, and again, would get around any and all security measures in the lobby.
