I know I have been recommended to go on a gluten free diet for a while... funny thing is I rarely consume much of it in the first place... I'll eat what I want and do what I want... Maury, I'll do what I want!

"what i want to know is when everybody started getting violently allergic to peanuts. i mean, i guess there were a tiny handful of people who were always allergic to them, but now we have schools flipping a bitch if a kid brings a PB&J sandwich in his lunch.
"

They have a couple different theories. But thanks to media hype and litigious parents it makes it seem like a lot more kids are allergic than actually are.

Quote :
"May 14, 2010 -- Peanut allergies in children have more than tripled in the United States from 1997 to 2008, an alarming trend that can’t yet be explained, a new study says."

Sounds terrible right? But...

Quote :
"The study says the percentage of children with allergies to peanuts or tree nuts soared to 2.1% in 2008 from 0.6% in 1997, while remaining at 1.3% for adults."

In the grand scheme of things, 2.1% is such a tiny percentage of the adolescent population.

Quote :
"One theory for the rise, the hygiene hypothesis, holds that “we’ve become very good at preventing natural infections, and the immune system is not chewing on things it would normally be chewing on,” Sicherer tells WebMD. “We’re not living on farms anymore, we have lots of antibiotics, but seeing an increase means that something has changed in the environment.”

The theory suggests that “clean living” and more medication use leaves immune systems in a condition that is more prone to attack harmless proteins, such as those in foods, pollens, and animal dander.

The increase also could be related, he says, to the way peanuts are processed.

“We roast peanuts, and potentially, roasting it makes a more allergenic food out of it,” he says. “Some people theorize that the oil in peanut butter might make it more allergenic. Roasting peanuts changes the sugar and makes the protein more stable to digestion and easier for the immune system to attack.”"

Bullshit. A good portion of my family has celiac. They've been through genetic and endoscopic testing to confirm. My Dad would give anything for a Krispy Kreme bagel and a cold beer. My Aunt gets the automatic explosive shits if she even uses a knife that's been in the same butter as a bread knife. She got so sick she had to go in for testing at the mayo clinic last year, when come to find out, her shampoo had gluten in it. Most of my family has had it for well over 10 years. Uncontrolled celiac can lead to celiac sprue, which can in turn lead to cancer.

So, yes, there are people out there who are giving up wheat in general for a diet or whatever, but you are just plain ignorant.

Would your family order stuff from a place like Bruegger's that says it's gluten-free? I think if I had an allergy like that I would be too paranoid to walk into a bakery

If you're certified "gluten free" then it's pretty safe. They'll order from places like Dominoes, or Mellow Mushroom, since they're certified. But they don't chance Brueggers yet, since they aren't.

Can you imagine how lame the human race would be if everyone was like Beethoven's family? What a bunch of frail, whining faggots we'd all be, cringing at the sight of shampoos and longing for doughnuts every day.

Fuck your family, dude. People with Celiac's are the chaff of humanity.

Beethoven only the strong need to survive. Your family needs to die off if they can't digest protein.

Beethoven's family would've already been evolved off the face of the earth if he didn't live in an overweight, spoiled society where his faggy celiac-beleaguered family members can daintily walk into a bruegger's bagel and start demanding unnatural fucking foods just because their fairy digestive systems can't handle normal people chow.

I wonder if increased allergies are caused by GMOs. I am all for improving quality and yield of foods but I don't know if enough research has been done to rule that out. The proteins can get altered quite a bit when they do that stuff.
