1) Historically Mississippi State has been very pedestrian in football. Even lowly NC State has a winning record against them. This year is out of the ordinary for the Bulldogs, and the national perception is that they are an underdog program that is having a good year. They are one of the feel good stories of 2012. I am genuinely happy for Dan Mullen and his program.

2) I have a family member who went to UT and extended family who live in Knoxville who love their Vols. I have somewhat of a vested interest in at least casually following them. For his sake, I hope they do well. But that doesn't mean that I cannot objectively point out their shortcomings as a program. Maybe you are happy where UT is, jaybee, and that's cool. I'm not judging, I'm just sayin' is all.

1) It has everything to do with Mississippi State being an underdog program. Lots of schools have this perception. South Carolina instantly comes to mind. Duke football this year is another. Louisiana Tech as well. It makes college football more interesting when underdog programs do well.

Using your logic, ND would never be an underdog ever, and I promise you they have been an underdog a LOT over the last 20 years

But seriously, it really varies by program. Some programs are underdogs regardless. Others are living off of their laurels, like ND. Even as bad as they have been (minus this year), beating ND still means something.

I look at these things through a different perspective, you may consider Mississippi State to be an elite program this year, I still see them as an underdog program who is trying to gain some respect. Heck, if Tennessee was 6-0 like Mississippi State they would be in the top 10, easily, if not top 5.

I was at the game on Saturday and actually cheering for the Vols.

I want to say it was all about the Vols looking good...but I think the Gamecocks are overrated. Connor Shaw isn't a great passer and they don't open up holes for their backs. They're suppose to have a bad ass defensive line but barely got pressure on Bray (until the last play).

Turnover at the end of the 1st half killed the Vols (as well as the last one...duh). Bray can still sling it though.
