The Wolfpack (4-0), the only team to go unbeaten in the Glenn Wilkes Classic, struggled on offense for most of the game. Smith, their top returning scorer from last season, had an especially tough game, missing 14 of his first 16 field-goal attempts. But the 6-foot-8 junior delivered in the final minute, first with a three-point play and then on the game-winning basket. Smith grabbed a loose ball after Julius Mays missed a 3-pointer and scored." |

Ok St. Had some decent size, but lousy defense. They moved the ball well to get inside shots, but it was against an undersized Akron, who's only big man got in early foul trouble and sat a lot. 11/15/2012 1:04:08 PM |

Strange article, Seth. Depth is our only real weakness.
Quote : | "Depth can be a tricky thing in college basketball.
On one hand, it can be a major asset for a coach for a variety of reasons: It helps if one or more key players suffers an injury; it makes practices more competitive, which can pay dividends in games; and it is an asset when teams have to play games on a quick turnaround.
But on the other hand, too much depth can be a very difficult thing for a coach to manage. Many times, if a coach has several talented players he is trying to keep happy and engaged, the end result can be a dysfunctional team.
Why? Because when a player knows he can play through his mistakes, he gains confidence. Most players need to get in a rhythm, and it's harder to do that if they're worried that they'll be subbed out the first time they turn the ball over or miss a shot. And seeing as how there are media timeouts every four minutes, a seven- or eight-man rotation is more than adequate in terms of keeping players fresh.
Another advantage of a short rotation is that it makes it easier for players to champion their roles, play to their strengths and buy in. Not every player can be their team's leading scorer, and for a team to compete at the highest level, it needs screeners, lockdown defenders and play-starters. There is a direct correlation between players knowing how many minutes they're going to get -- and what roles they're going to play -- and how well both they and the team will perform.
Depth will be a key focus for coach Mark Gottfried and the North Carolina State Wolfpack this season. The Wolfpack have the potential to be an elite team, one that can compete for ACC and national titles. But in order for that to happen, Gottfried will have to find the right balance with a roster that has more talented players than it does significant roles in the rotation.
Here are the five biggest depth-related questions confronting NC State this season:
1. Can the Wolfpack develop a cohesive rotation? Last season's NC State team was a great example of the chemistry that can be developed by having a short rotation with clearly defined roles. Gottfried took an underachieving group of individuals and transformed them into a cohesive unit that embraced roles, played to their strengths and played to win. His seven-man rotation (with a perimeter and a frontcourt substitute) enabled Gottfried to keep his system consistent, empower his players and build a trust strong enough to withstand losing six of nine games in the middle of league play.
While the Pack had plenty of star power, there is no denying that C.J. Williams, Richard Howell, DeShawn Painter and Alex Johnson were instrumental in NC State making its run to the Sweet 16. With Williams, Johnson and Painter no longer with the team -- and some very talented incoming freshmen on the roster -- will the Wolfpack be able to develop a cohesive rotation in which everyone accepts their playing time and role?
I expect Gottfried to go with an eight-man rotation, including a starting lineup of Lorenzo Brown, Rodney Purvis, Scott Wood, C.J. Leslie and Howell (with Tyler Lewis, T.J. Warren and Thomas de Thaey coming off the bench). Lewis will come in to play the point while Brown moves to the 2, Warren can sub in at either the small or power forward position and de Thaey will replace Howell in the post. Look for Lewis to play around 15 minutes per game, Warren to play about 25 minutes per game and de Thaey to be a situational substitute.
2. Can Rodney Purvis take over C.J. Williams' role? Last season, Williams was the Pack's designated defender and complementary player. He brought toughness and maturity to NC State, averaging 10.6 points per game while shooting 50 percent from the field, 34 percent from the 3-point line and 80 percent from the foul line, all career highs. Most important, he embraced and championed his role.
Purvis, an elite, explosive athlete and a McDonald's All-American, will replace Williams in the lineup. We know he's an incredible talent, but will Purvis be willing to let the game come to him and defer to Leslie, Wood and Brown? Will he be effective off the ball? He has all of the skills to be a great defender, but he is replacing an experienced senior who understood defensive principles and played with maturity and toughness.
3. Can T.J. Warren take over as the Wolfpack's top bench player? Painter, who transferred to Old Dominion this offseason, averaged 20 minutes per game last season and was a valuable frontcourt sub for the Pack. Although he only averaged a little more than one rebound every five minutes, he was a capable low-post defender and effective in the high-post offense. He could play both in the high post or the duck-in position. Plus, he complemented both Leslie and Howell.
Warren is a gifted 6-foot-7 offensive player with a great feel for the game. He can make shots, is an excellent passer and can rebound well for his position. But will Gottfried use Warren as his primary frontcourt sub? And if so, can the Wolfpack defend the low post consistently without a player of Painter's size (6-9)? If Warren is in the perimeter rotation, how will it affect the distribution of minutes? Further, are there enough minutes to keep this gifted freshman happy?
4. How does Tyler Lewis fit into the mix? Johnson, a fifth-year senior, played 20 minutes a game for NC State last season, backing up all three perimeter positions. The Wolfpack had the versatility to move either Williams to the 3 or Brown off the ball. Plus, Johnson was a solid defender and high-energy player.
Lewis is a pure, pass-first point guard. He sees plays early and delivers the ball on time and on target. He has the ability to make players better, but is a potential liability on the defensive end due to his lack of size (5-7, 157) and strength. The question is how will a player who is accustomed to having the ball in his hands adjust to a limited role while knowing the coaching staff has already received a commitment from one of the best point guards in the class of 2013 (Anthony Barber)?
5. Will Jordan Vandenberg get minutes? One player I left out of NC State's projected rotation is promising 7-foot junior Jordan Vandenberg. Vandenberg gives NC State a big body to protect the front of the rim and can post defend similar to Painter. If he earns the 20 minutes that Painter played, how will it affect the rest of the rotation?
Gottfried's team played with incredible confidence last season, in large part because the pieces fit and everyone embraced and accepted their roles. He recruited one of the best classes in the country and now must find the right role for each player. Just as important, he must sell his players on championing those roles.
The pressure to play the freshmen will be great. Can he manage his roster and keep his talented freshmen class patient while instilling confidence? As the season evolves, we will find out if depth is indeed a blessing or a burden for the Pack." |
