i don't know why they wouldn't let him coach in the bowl game, but whatever.

i was going to get some work done today... but this might be the perfect excuse to stay home and celebrate.

would love to get James Franklin, but how likely is it he bails on Vandy after 2 seasons and an 8-4 season? (5-3 sec)

Yeah, so why would we fire TOB before the bowl game? That doesn't make sense to me, especially given his great record in bowl games

^I think overall program power. Vanderbilt is built like a high school right now compared to NC State.*

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1413486-vanderbilt-football-dores-need-to-keep-james-franklin-in-nashville

Quote :
"Let’s face it—Vanderbilt will never sell as many season tickets as they will to Rocky Top. Heck, you have to donate a certain amount of money to the Tennessee athletic fund just to have the right to buy season tickets.

Vanderbilt will never play in front of the 100,000-plus fans that pour into Neyland Stadium, and Northwestern will never play in front of the 100,000 that pour into The Big House.

It would be easy for guys like James Franklin and Pat Fitzgerald to look at greener pastures. Tennessee and Michigan are an easier sell to a four-star recruit than Vanderbilt and Northwestern. You have crazed fans, a terrific alumni base and a much bigger budget to work with in Knoxville and Ann Arbor.

So here’s why Fitzgerald stayed at Northwestern and why James Franklin should stay at Vanderbilt:

Coach Franklin is building something special in Nashville. Yes, he has to recruit on a national basis because of academics, but he currently has nine four-star recruits committed to play for the 'Dores right now.

If he stays at Vanderbilt, he will get the type of young men that go to Notre Dame, Stanford and Northwestern. These programs win and so can he—he's proved it.

I’ll tell you what should keep him in Nashville. He has a city, a school, an administration and most importantly, a football team that now believes they can win every Saturday. Vanderbilt, like Northwestern, believes they are going to win and should win every Saturday."

NC State probably has a better fan base*, facilities*, and administrative support than Vanderbilt*, especially considering that Yow has already hired the guy once at Maryland.

Quote :
"North Carolina State coach Tom O'Brien has been fired after a disappointing 7-5 season, the school announced Sunday.

O'Brien will not coach in the Wolfpack's upcoming bowl game. Offensive coordinator Dana Bible has been named interim head coach, and all assistants have been retained through at least the bowl.

Even though O'Brien has led the Wolfpack to three straight bowl games, his teams have failed to live up to expectations throughout his tenure. O'Brien went 40-35 in six seasons -- but just 22-26 in the ACC.

"I appreciate the opportunity to have coached at North Carolina State University and I feel that the program is in a better place now than when I started," O'Brien said in a statement. "I'm proud of the young men that I have coached here, for their accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.

"Wolfpack football is as sound academically as it's ever been with a (single year) APR of 990 to be reported this spring. I appreciate all of my coaches and wish them the best and I look forward to life after football."

This season provided the perfect example of how North Carolina State fell short of what many believed could be an outstanding season. The Wolfpack were embarrassed in the season opener by a Tennessee team that won only one SEC game.

But the Wolfpack also pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season when they took down No. 3 Florida State, 17-16, to put themselves in the driver's seat in the ACC Atlantic Division.

That was a short-lived dream. North Carolina State ended up dropping games to North Carolina and a head-scratcher to Virginia, and ended with losses in three of its final five games.

"Coach O'Brien's service to NC State over the last six years has been sincerely appreciated by Wolfpack Nation," athletic director Debbie Yow said in a statement. "We especially appreciate his attention toward NCAA rules compliance, a value that will continue to be held by NC State. We wish him well in future pursuits."

A closer look at O'Brien's overall ACC record reveals an 11-19 mark against ACC Atlantic Division opponents -- including 1-14 on the road."

He was fired now so Debbie could get to work. And so he couldn't go out on a bowl win.

I think it is fitting that TOB went out with a victory over a terrible BC team in a game that was not televised.

as i mentioned before, it's all about recruiting. this gives the new coach more time.

then again we couldve pulled a (dirty) Ohio State and let him coach the bowl game while hiring another head coach and let him concentrate on recruiting while the other head coach worries about the game.

I feel like this coaching search will be more interesting than the basketball one. We'll see how the rest of the country truly views our program.

If you know you're gonna make the move now, why wait till January to do it? Especially with Arkansas, Tennessee, Auburn all looking for coaches. The bowl game is pretty much meaningless.

A bit of an aside, but...

We were expected to be anything next year? I haven't heard a peep out of the backup QB's this year and I was curious how we would do, with or without Tom.

Bill Cowher or just shut the whole football program down. Tired of being ho hum. Better to just be a spectator.

^^^^ chances don't get any better with a coaching transition. i said "if/when" for a reason. we could also get cowher and 10 Ws next year, not that it's even remotely likely.

I'd bet that it has to do with the contract. if he coached the bowl game, we'd have to pay him bonuses, or some form of additional pay.

what sucks is that now we're going to drop in bowl consideration since we're "in flux" and Duke or Vtech might be given preference (read that, not original commentary)

there will be other teams not going to bowls who will also be firing their coaches

if we believe we'll be targeting some of the same guys as them, then we'd be better served firing TOB prior to a bowl game that's a month away

i don't see the confusion here

the problem is that the team was going to suckass next year regardless because of what TOB had lined up recruiting-wise.

so IBTTLBNC (in before the TOB lovers blame new coach)

I don't really understand the Chad Morris talk. Dude was coaching high school ball 3 years ago and would cost a fortune considering he has no D1 head coaching experience. I don't see Yow going for someone like that.

Not a big fan of the Clemson OC option either...and I doubt Yow is. Word is that she values head coaching experience and is not likely to go after assistants. So if she does end up going that route...it's not going to be a guy that was coaching kids who's balls just dropped three years ago.

We were going to the bottom of the bowl barrel anyway. VT is a better draw than us anyway, so they're in the Russell Athletic or the Sun. If GT gets passed over for Orlando, they can fall no farther than Sun by league rules. Pretty sure Belk has already decided on Duke. So we're in Nashville no matter what.
