No you don't.

A better comparison would be to you giving advice on picking up women.

Faith, by nature, ignores (or maybe surpasses is a better word) reason and evidence, and because of this, it frequently conflicts with what we know to be reality. Neither of Pi's parents are particularly religious. His father is puzzled by his son's fervor; he himself believes in the reality of business.

While I am not faithless, I don't think you need faith to teach this book. Part of its point is that the truth isn't nearly wondrous or useful or soothing as the story. If the whole of the book had been story number two, it'd be a very short, very ugly story about debasing oneself for survival. In Pi's version, there is something sublime.

I bring this bttt only because after watching this again and reading this thread, I'm surprised how much focus there is on the plot with almost no discussion of how gorgeous this film is. This is one I really wish I had seen in the theatre.

It didn't win best picture or screenplay, it won best director, visual effects and score

The sky mirrored on the placid ocean surface was arguably my favorite shot in the film.

this is one of my favorite movies. amazing cinematography, music, the whole deal. that year was loaded for best picture but this would have won it all in another year.

I'm also reading the book now, which is very good.

Aha, until I saw ^^, I was thinking that you were referencing the movie Pi. I was like "Gorgeous? I guess..."

Now it makes sense.
