currently reading: A Dirty Job --- Christopher Moore (It's not as hilarious as Fool or Lamb, but it's still pretty great. It's almost like a lighter version of a Tom Robbins book.)

^ Yeah, I made it through that trilogy last year. They are good books, but are a bit of a slog.. If you want Dense try Scott Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series.

^Sure I'll add ratings on my next new read post. A lot of it depends on the type of books you like. For instance, I would give Altered Carbon a 10 out of 10, but if you aren't into science fiction detective novels that are set in a future where a person's consciousness can be downloaded and transfered into different bodies, you might give it a lower score.

I think that happens sometimes, especially if the book can be a chore to read. I really loved the R. Scott Bakker books at the end, but at times, they were terribly boring to read. I'd read them and then pick up something else.

It might be that you are choosing book you think you should enjoy, but you really don't. Try to read some dirrent types of books. One type is bound to grab your attention and you'll been finished before you know it.

Was definitely a great book and very detailed. The first 500 pages or so are build up from approximately a year and a half or so prior to December 7th. The attack lasts 100 pages or so and then the remainder of the book is about the fall out in the US with regard to investigations and commissions. The post-attack stuff got to be very long-winded and a bit boring, but everything up to it is a great read. It's a very sobering book that should help put a lot of things in perspective if you watch anything in the news and wonder why we can't just fix things or why something wasn't stopped. The complexity is astounding.

^^As I was reading Iain M. Banks I did notice a very familiar style to his writing and especially his humor in dialog. It struck me as very similar to Douglas Adams just more subtle. The books in the Culture series are interesting mainly because they take place in the ever so rare future Utopia where adventure is by choice or takes place outside of the mainstream. There is no overall impending doomsday scenario so the books seem more episodic and feel a little lighter. I've read the fiirst two in the series and the most interesting aspect to me was how Banks uses each story to examine the percieved pros and cons of "The Culture" and how different personalities would approach the society. Banks writes interesting futuristic adventure stories with broad political undertones.

I would suggest giving Player of Games a try. It's a quick read and IMHO a very good, thought provoking book.
