This. If you were looking for the next Citizen Kane you were going in with the wrong expectations. If you wanted a good action movie which capitalized on amazing CGI as opposed to being compromised by overuse of CGI (I'm looking at you transformers) then this is one for you. Really well done action sequences, epic fights that you could actually follow, a cool overall look, and some callbacks to monster movies of the past... what's not to like?7/14/2013 7:22:35 PM |

I'm not sure why the kaiju didn't just rip the Striker Eureka apart after they disabled it with their EMP. That's really the only thing that made me o.O during the movie. 7/14/2013 7:32:15 PM |

Lots of things didn't make sense. Why wasn't the wall lined with those plasma cannons? And how did they think the wall was going to stop a kaiju after seeing them demolish whole cities. Why were so few jaegers built? The us and china with their manufacturing capacity should have been able to churn them out. Why didn't they also just spawn camp the rift with a bunch of jaegers. But this movie wasn't for plot or dialogue, I liked it for what it was a mash up of Godzilla and robot jox 7/14/2013 7:46:58 PM |

Why can't a movie be a beautiful cgi fest AND have a plot and good dialgue ? Why can't we have both ? 7/14/2013 8:02:43 PM |

Didn't Marshal say during the intro to Steeldome or whatever it was called that the hangar could hold 30 Jaegers and they had 5 other bases in HK with the same capacity, all of them full of Jaegers? That would be 150. And at one time they used to all be full, but now it was just the 5. My take on it was that the Kaiju started tearing them up, so it started taking more and more Jaegers to defend each Kaiju. That is when they shifted resources to the Wall. That said, the wall still seems really stupid. The kaiju are getting bigger all of the time and you think a wall is going to hold them back? A better solution IMO would have been a combination of coastal defensive fortications combined with piloted Jaegers. And with nukes in the picture, I'm kinda unsure why they didn't use small tactical nukes in a 50 kt yield to nuke the bastards when they attacked and were still offshore.
Anyways, nitpcking a silly movie. None of this affected me watching it. All of this is reflecting on it after the movie. At the time I turned my brain off and just had a damn good time. Can't wait to see all the backstory that got left on the cutting room floor when the Blu-Ray is released. 7/14/2013 9:12:10 PM |

^ the comic prequel they did said the greatest number of jaegers in service at the same time was 20, which seemed low as hell. There had been something like 50 kaiju total. And initially they killed the kaiju with nukes, but thought the jaegers were a better solution 7/14/2013 9:15:25 PM |

I laughed at the line about the Analog Jaeger, then I facepalmed.
Great action flick though. Much better than I anticipated. They did a good job of capturing the scale of the robots/monsters. 7/14/2013 10:56:42 PM |

That actually made sense. The kaiju were always going after populated areas. They aren't there to fight the jaegers.

Yeah the thing I didn't really get was why they didn't use tactical nukes on the Kaiju. And also why didn't the jaegers have more large sharp sword like objects. Seemed like they worked a lot better than big fists.
But overall I loved it. First time in almost a year that I've ponyed up the cash to see a movie in IMAX 3D.

The Kaiju headed straight for populated areas so nuking them probably wasn't a sustainable solution. Hell, for all we know they were nuking them, but the Jaegars were there to defend against the ones that got too/near the shoreline. Also, the Jaegars were wiping the floor with the Kaiju until the Category 3's started showing up so nuking them wasn't really necessary. I think the Category 3s, starting with Knifehead at the beginning, were the first Kaiju that were specialized for combat with Jaegars. Before that they were just big dumb human smashers.
Also, there were other Kaiju with bladed weapons, like this one from the prologue.

Good points, except for one. The rift was out in the middle of the ocean. Given that the humans could detect them as soon as they came through the rift I don't see why they couldn't be nuked. That spot was more or less the most isolated spot on earth (outside of the poles). 7/15/2013 2:55:00 PM |

Was it really out in the middle though? Didn't seem like it took that long for the Jaegars to fly/walk to it. 7/15/2013 3:07:03 PM |

just saw it. it was one big anime cartoon. It did what was I expected it to. I liked all over the top prototypical characters. I enjoyed Ron Pearlman(sp?) and even that dude for sunny in Philly and Stryker from the dark knight rises. Excellent visuals however I couldn't see shit. Ray Charles style. I dont know where this phenomenon of watching a fight between two monstrosities super super close up came from. it was bad enough that the monsters always came at night while it was raining in the middle of a dark ocean. I came to see fights and I actually want to see the fight. pan that camera out.
otherwise I enjoyed it. I could care less about who was dying. I'm not going to pretend I care about the human characters.
The whole movie I was thinking "dont they have ejection seats in that bitch. even batman thought of that"
if you watch "Cloverfield" or "Godzilla" before this movie (back to back) it may make those movies at least enjoyable. [/said no one ever] 7/20/2013 11:36:18 PM |

Mostly. There are so many things that they could have elaborated on to make it better, and to fix some of the plot gaps. These things include, but are not limited to:
1. "i wished we could've seen more from crimson typhoon, cherno alpha, and coyote tango." Maybe an extra fight or something so we got a feel for their different styles? I felt like they were in and out in about five minutes there. Interesting themes as far as the various nations or origin and the type of Jaegar. 2. Idris Elba's radiation poisoning (were the Russians developing any symptoms after being in their super old Jaegar?), and general drift blanking badassery (how do you bring nothing into a drift?) 3. They could've done more with Ron Perlman, actually.
Overall, though, I thought it was good. Much better than I thought it might be, really. I really liked all of the Gundam Wing references, too.

I probably hyped it too much because it was disappointing.
Far too little robot vs monster screen time and far too much people running around doing shit.
I also never got that 'fuck yeah whoop ass' feeling I get with other action blockbusters.
The fights were good, but all felt like the same thing over and over save for the flying pregnant skewer.
Elbow punch was awesome.

so they said that only kaiju dna could pass through the portal or whatever, so how did the escape pods manage to do it? did i just miss that or plot hole? otherwise there was general badassery galore 7/31/2013 9:53:49 PM |

I assumed that anything could pass through from the alien world because it was already assumed to be alien if it were there. As in there's no reason to have a "are you an X" check system on the X side entrance to the portal.
I.E. The restriction was to stop humans from coming to their world, they had no need to stop anything from leaving.

Liked it a lot.
Although the whole time I'm sitting here thinking...this is a threat to the entire human species, and the best they can come up with is large robots, and in short supply as well? Then, the next best thing they can come up with is a wall?
Even the jaeger program. This was their solution to defend humanity, and you essentially have 4 guys running it? Marshall, crazy guy that looks like the crazy guy from Con air, and the two scientists? Yea I realize this is the crew after the program was dismantled, but even so, you would think more people would be involved. 10/18/2013 11:26:42 AM |

^Most alien invasion movies usually do that... somehow the combined defense of Earth is 1 old jaeger and an under-budgeted shit show with Charlie Day and a chalk board as your R & D department?
Alien movies always under-use nukes also...
I like how the "Oh shit I forgot we had it" backup weapon (Sword) instantly kills Kaiju once they remember they had it.
