From my limited following of the events that led up to this I get the impression that anti-government types in the Congress essentially made this happen, but being someone in my 20s who uses mostly electronic correspondence and being not in very rural area, I won't be largely negatively affected by this change.

I'd warrant that you won't at all be impacted by this. Can you legitimately think of any way in which 5 day vs. 6 day service will make a difference? I mean, I guess if you were late on something and had to get it post marked a certain date, but that's more you being a procrastinator than an issue with days or hours of service.

I'd rather them get rid of Wed or Thur so there would only be a single day delay on the weekend (and one during the work-week of course)

this will simply delay the inevitable

"smartpost" needs to become the default method by which "regular" mail is delivered: UPS or FedEx handle the backbone and USPS is a local operation only

also, i don't care if they raise the cost of sending a letter to $1...maybe it'll cut down on the junk mail i receive

^yeah, stamps do seem pretty modestly-priced when you consider how little mail most people send.

i sent more mail for my wedding than i had sent the previous 10 years combined...if not longer than that...and those stamps were something like $0.65/each

$1/letter isn't going to bother the average consumer past their usual bitching about prices going up
