One of the big problems with legal at state level illegal at the federal level:

http://www.salon.com/2014/01/08/absurd_on_every_single_level_how_the_feds_may_be_crippling_the_legal_pot_industry/

Everyone knew this was going to be an issue, yet there's no current solution. I really hope that the federal government can get its collective head out of its collective ass and pass an exemption for these businesses.

Yeah the Feds are going to have to face the music very soon. Ballot measures are being voted on in Washington DC and California this year to legalize for recreational use. Other States are working on legalization for medical use. All of these dispensaries have to deal in cash.

I don't really disagree that marijuana can be addictive or even harmful. That just isn't a reason to outlaw its use.

a scientific issue politicized...

Congress has difficulties pushing any real progress forward... but because this will help secure their seat, Marijuana is at the forefront.

I say table this issue and get a move on for everything else because compared to everything else between the US and the world, this is an issue that can wait.

you paid any attention to Congress over the past 5+ years?

anyways, it's a lot more than "stoners wanna smoke, let's make it legal and tax it"

I think liquor and weed should be sold at convenience stores and grocery stores, and cocaine and stuff at ABC stores.

Anyone come across good stats on marihuana prosecution by race?

I'm about to pass out but off of the top of my head I think 60-65% of marijuana-related arrests are against minorities while the usage rate is equal among races

could be off but I'm pretty sure that's the number

But...

Does it show if those charges were tacked on for an arrest for another reason, or were they merely the result of a stop-and-frisk type program?

Looks like there can't possibly be confounding variables, but who knows...

"“I think the president needs to speak to his NIH director in charge of drug abuse,” Kennedy said on MSNBC’s “Hardball” on Monday night. “[She] would tell the president that, in fact, today’s modern, genetically modified marijuana, so it’s much higher THC levels, far surpass the marijuana that the president acknowledges smoking when he was a young person.”"

Quote :
"“We need to have presidential decisions made based upon public health and the sound science that the federal government’s invested in.”"

Quote :
"“I mean, if the president feels alcohol is worse than tobacco, what’s he prepared to do? And I’ll tell you, the president won’t be able to do a thing,” Kennedy said. “Why? Because alcohol is too powerful an industry to change. And right now, we have a chance to stop another for-profit industry from targeting our public health.”"

I think the only real danger with pot legalization is the massive growth of the edibles market. I really don't want people eating a pot filled Snickers while driving down the highway. That shit has to be regulated. The plant itself though? I think the science has proven that it's far less harmful to the public than any number of things that are perfectly legal. You want to go after a giant industry that's chemically destroying American lives? Start with sugar.

Regulated, as in amount and strength of THC in the edible should be regulated and clearly posted on the wrapper, or something like that.

i do think that marijuana should be legalized, but i agree that things should be clearly labeled, like 190% alcohol and whatnot.

for instance, i have no experience with any sort of "edible" thc, and i wouldn't know not to eat an entire cookie or whatever. (I only learned about this from some news article of a guy killing himself after eating too much of it.)

Recreational MJ now legal in four states
5 states will have ballot initiatives in 2016
5 other states have legalization bills that actually have a chance in 2015
