thats like, most every emcee that has made it to mainstream status since Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch

which btw are more easy on the ears than Macklemore...in case it hasn't been mentioned

Don’t Hate Macklemore Because He’s White
Hate him because his music is terrible.

dang wheres the hate coming from? i guess everyone is just judging him off thrift shop and white walls. its unfortunate he made those singles because the rest of the album is musical brilliance.

he and ryan lewis have changed the game and they've done it with positive rap music. i can't figure out why this guy is being worshipped by everyone. his tracks speak out for independent music, the voice of the people, same love, consumerism, alcaholism, but i guess the iq level of our nation isn't there yet.

I don't get the hate either. Music is so subjective, at least Macklemore stands out somewhat from the universally terrible field.

i'm a bit of a hip hop head and i'm not really a fan of his music

and that "same love" song isn't going to change someone's heart or mind all by itself

but it's definitely a part of a wave that will eventually be responsible for changing the sentiment of our society toward good, away from evil, toward justice, away from injustice

i can get behind that shit. good on ya, Macklefuck.

kendrick lamar album isn't even good. half the time he is rapping from the perspective of his 15 year old self. it only got a bunch of hype because of that stupid mixtape he made dissing everyone.

thing is what you call hip hop today is not actually hip hop. real hip hop has been hijacked by people like kendrick. real hip hop like pac used to be about a movement and changing the culture. macklemore is about that in so many of his songs. much closer to actually being hip hop than the other good rap albums.

Quote :
"They say it's so refreshing to hear somebody on records
No guns, no drugs, no sex, just truth
The guns that's America, the drugs are what they gave to us
And sex sells itself, don't judge her 'til it's you
Ah, I'm not more or less cautious
The rappers rappin' 'bout them strippers up on the pole, copping
These interviews are obnoxious
Saying that it's poetry is so well spoken, stop it
I grew up during Reaganomics
When Ice T was out there on his killing cops shit
Or Rodney King was getting beat on
And they let off every single officer
And Los Angeles went and lost it
Now every month there is a new Rodney on Youtube
It's just something our generation is used to
And neighbourhoods where you never see a news crew
Unless they're gentrifying, white people don't even cruise through
And my subconcious telling me stop it
This is an issue that you shouldn't get involved in
Don't even tweet, R.I.P Trayvon Martin
Don't wanna be that white dude, million man marchin'
Fighting for our freedom that my people stole
Don't wanna make all my white fans uncomfortable
But you don't even have a fuckin' song for radio
Why you out here talkin race, tryin' to save the fuckin' globe
Don't get involved with the causes in mind
White privilege, white guilt, at the same damn time
So we just party like it's nineteen ninty nine
Celebrate the ignorance while these kids keep dying"

more substance in that verse than kendricks whole career

His lyrics mention Malcolm Gladwell's ten-thousand hours, anti-consumerism, addiction, gay rights, and a bunch of other themes popular with upper middle class that live in cities. His album expertly covered the right things so people that listened felt smart and was catchy enough to have broad appeal for an ironic commercialization.

That said I do really like it.

Re: What was said above about substance

Neon Cathedral first verse:

Quote :
"
Round here they sing broken hymns
Their prayers flow better when they're soaked in gin
The amp's dusty and sits in the corner
By a bartender that'll pickpocket your heart
And a jukebox that'll steal your quarter
Bartender, please give me a confession
Exchange fear for courage in the form of a well drink
There's a heavy current, got a long way to swim
Closed the Bible a while ago, I need some shots for this sin
Hail Mary, come with me, feel like Pac when it hits
Got some fire in my belly and a riot in the gut
Bushmills for a band-aid, the sweet taste of blood
Then I might actually feel something if I don't cover it up
Watch their faces, familiar places
Even if they haven't left the vinyl booth that they stayed in
The motel next door, a sign that reads vacant
And a truth that's so strong I'd be a fool not to chase it
But yet, I'm a fool and I stay here
Hope these problems drown themselves, I die in wait here
One more, four more, fuck it a night cap
Service starts at 5 tomorrow and I'll be right back
"

I realize you're trolling. But that's not even close to true. That "mixtape" was actually just a single verse. It also was a year after Kendrick Lamar's album had been out...and his album had received loads of praise prior to that verse.

And I don't give a shit if you think Macklemore is a better rapper or is more "hip hop" than Kendrick Lamar (which is a fucking dumb argument in the first place...regardless of whether it's true or not). But don't just make shit up about Kendrick Lamar's "hype"

Also if you think Kendrick never raps about anything of substance, listen to HiiiPower.

I watched the Grammys last year praying that Mumford would lose and Frank Ocean would win because I love Frank.

The nominees for best alternative album were decent but these award shows don't care about the art. It's all about views and pushing political agendas. I will not watch The Oscars this year because 12 Years A Slave will get it's nob slobbed due to it's Afro-British director. Am I the only one that thinks this special treatment is insulting? I didn't really like Shame but I've heard nothing but good things about 12 Years a Slave. I'm sure it's a good movie but that is beside the point. Before Midnight didn't even get nominated so get that shit out of here. It should be about the art, not white people feel goody politics. Fuck that.

The Grammys are based on record sales.

You're supposed to watch them to see if there was any popular music that you might kinda like.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammy_Award#Nomination_process

Holy shit. People actually vote for them? LOL, this whole time I thought it was like a celebration of who sold the most records.

Dead serious. A long time ago, I was told (facetiously, I guess) that the Grammys were based on record sales. And that's what it always seemed like so I believed it.

I had no clue that people were actually voting. Frankly, I'm still not sure that's the case.

Truth from Trugoy's mouth is here to scar

So open up your vents and record well
For this is where we stand, for the true tell
Ghetto gained a ghetto name from ghetto ways
Now there could be some ghetto gangs and ghetto play
If ghetto thang can have its way in ghetto rage
Then there must be some ghetto love and ghetto change
Though confident they keep it kept, we know for fact
They lie like ghettos form, 'cause people lack
To see that they must all get out the ghetto hold
The truth they never told
'Cause it's just the ghetto thang"

Cocaine and crack
Which brings sickness to blacks,
Sick of swoll' head rappers
With their sicker-than raps

The facts are gettin' sick
Even sicker perhaps

As I'm jettin', Millie floats in like a zombie
I ask her what's her problem, all she says is "Where is he?"
I give a point, she pulls a pistol, people screamin'
She shouts to Dill he's off to hell cuz he's a demon
None of the kids could understand what was the cause
All they could see was a girl holdin' a pistol on Claus
Dillon pleaded mercy, said he didn't mean to
Do all the things that her mind could do nothing but cling to
Millie bucked him and with the quickness it was over "

He's still annoying.

Oh my gay people should be allowed to marry?!? Why I have never heard of this issue until this fine young man with a silly haircut informed me.
