http://www.buzzfeed.com/ellievhall/mother-finds-diet-list-in-her-7-year-old-daughters-bedroom
Quote : | "Mother Finds “Diet List” In Her 7-Year-Old Daughter's Bedroom
Australian mother of three Amy Cheney was cleaning her daughter's room when she found this note "innocently sitting on the floor" amidst "Polly Pockets, friendship bracelets and a variety of other crap 7-year-olds love to hoard."

Amy writes that she began to feel "physically ill" as she made sense of the "diyet" list.
Diyet. Jesus.
Where did she learn the word diet? How does she even know what a freaking diet is?
Whose fault is this? Is it mine because I let her play with Barbies? Because sometimes she's allowed to watch Total Drama Action? Is it because when I draw with her I can only draw stick figures?
Seventeen Poosh-ups two times a day.
I felt sick. Physically ill. Like someone had knocked the air from my chest.
I could feel myself getting increasingly anxious the more words I was able to interpret from her seven-year-old spelling.
Three Appals, One Per, Two Keewee Froots.
How did this happen?
"Weight has never been an issue in our home — it is, for the most part, irrelevant," Amy explains. "I am smart about this stuff."
The 30-year-old mother notes that she has a degree in early childhood studies, writing that her family "focuses on and promotes healthy eating and healthy bodies," and adds that she never asks her husband if she "looks fat" in something. Via: mamamia.com.au Via: stylemagazine.net.au
"And then I got angry," Amy writes. "Really, really angry."
F*ck you society. F*ck you and your and stupid obsession with women and the way they look.
How dare you sneak into my home with your ridiculous standards and embed them in my little girls head, polluting her innocence with your pathetic ideals.
Jog/run up and down the driv way three times.
Your unrealistic expectations will not win in my house.
I am tired of the beauty and body obsessed arena we live in. I am tired of women being portrayed as objects to be saluted and admired or shunned and shamed depending on whether they measure up to societies idealistic standards. I am tired of the conformist attitudes. And then, because I was so tired (and sad, so sad) that I cried.
When her daughter got home from school, Amy found out that "Miss Seven" learned about "diyets" from a friend (also 7 years old), who was on one herself.
"We chatted about diets and beautiful healthy bodies and the gift that they are," she writes. "I am not naive. I know this will not be the last time I talk about food and weight and bodies with my daughter. I am just ultra pissed that it had to start when she was seven."" |
I understand the outrage but why is it such a bad idea for a kid to know to eat well and exercise? Doesn't seem like such a bad idea. Am I wrong for thinking that?

^^Well, you definitely want to teach kids about food and energy and how it all works but not to obsessively write it all down and create a checklist. And, depending on how far this "diyet" went, the kid could be developing a food obsession that was totally avoidable.

Maybe the kid is already crazy about food, and that's why she got pumped about a diet. Another kid might think the whole notion was stupid.
I dunno. Regardless, I'm definitely not freaking out. But I'm also not pretending that all the stupid, neurotic stuff adults do with food is totally harmless to children.

I don't understand the outrage. Why does everyone assume that diet = weight loss? I think there's a lot of projection on the part of fatties going on. 3/7/2013 4:57:02 PM

As far as I can tell, nobody is assuming that diet = fat loss.
So if anybody is making assumptions, it's you.
I'm surprised you think it's appropriate for a healthy 7 year-old to be making a checklist of food and exercise they intend to eat and do every day. It's ridiculous. 3/7/2013 5:05:01 PM

How is it any less appropriate than making a list of the fun shit she's going to do throughout the day?
Starting good habits is best started young. I see no problem with a seven year old girl having the opinion that eating good foods and exercising should be part of her daily routine.
I agree with ^^, everyone is all up in arms because they are assuming this little girl's diet list has something to do with her self image or interest in losing weight and there's no evidence she's doing anything more than being a normal, imaginative kid. 3/7/2013 5:11:35 PM

To be clear...I'm not assuming anything about this particular 7 year-old.
But some of you seem to be dismissing all concerns about children/nutrition/etc...by saying it's possible that this one particular 7 year-old is normal.
I get that people are fat, mindless pigs, and some of you want them to be healthy or whatever. But if that means we think it's cool for children to eat 3 apples and run up and down the driveway, then apparently people are also incredibly cruel (to children) and stupid (because they're promoting the opposite of good health). 3/7/2013 5:28:10 PM

If she made that kind of checklist and her mother says she's never used the word diet and "weight has never been an issue" it seems like she might be unhealthy and the kid has tried to figure out how to NOT be like her. I did that as a kid. Not at 7, but not too much later.
If it's the other end of the spectrum and she is healthy and knowledgeable about food and exercise, I don't think she would be surprised that her daughter was showing an interest in those things too. 3/7/2013 5:53:48 PM

Jesus Christ. Somebody discriminates against an illegal alien, woman, or someone non-white, you people are all over it. But you're all about some fat-people discrimination. Is it b/c fat people did it to themselves? I'm sure that's true for 99.4% of the overweight population. But what about those that really can't help it. 3/7/2013 5:57:52 PM

I'm going to assume you guys don't understand because you're men, and you never would have voluntarily started an aspirational food journal when you were 7, but whatever, since you're all apparently unaware, this type of activity encourages preoccupation/obsession with food, which can lead to an actual weight problem.
And, Skwinkle, the mother made it clear that weight isn't an issue in their home so they don't have to talk about the act of dieting and keep food and exercise journals. They just eat right and exercise normally, which is how we should be with and for our children. 3/7/2013 6:12:48 PM

I honestly don't see what sex or gender has to do with it. Age 7 or 8 was when I began to plump up as a kid. I continued to gain weight all the way though college, and eventually I addressed my poor diet, but I had to reverse over a decade of bad habits. I wish that some adult in my life had helped me develop good habits and understand the foundations of nutrition; it would have saved me a lot of grief during middle and high school. Being fat had a significantly negative impact on my self-esteem.
Quote : | "And, Skwinkle, the mother made it clear that weight isn't an issue in their home so they don't have to talk about the act of dieting and keep food and exercise journals. They just eat right and exercise normally, which is how we should be with and for our children." |
Here's the thing: humans evolved in an environment where energy dense foods like candy were basically non-existent or at least extremely rare. There's a good reason that chocolate tastes better than broccoli. Children (and really, many adults) don't understand that, though. In the modern era, it's more important than ever that kids start learning to control their food consumption.
It doesn't have to be a task. The fact that this girl is actually interested in something so vital to her lifelong health is really encouraging. But, rather than helping the child harness that natural curiosity and use it in a positive way, the mom (who, undoubtedly, is projecting her own insecurities) goes nuts about it. 3/7/2013 8:13:03 PM

Ok, let me break this down:
1. Adoption - I do think some agencies are ridiculously strict and refuse adoption to couples where one or both might be overweight even if barely so. I know it's not the norm, but I have seen it happen to my former boss (she went through a different company and they now have a beautiful little boy)
2. Birthing/fertility options - ATTN FAT PPL: you have different "options" because quite frankly, being obese increases your risk of complications as pregnancy increases your blood flow tremendously, thus you're making your heart work even harder. You're also at risk for diabetes, which can cause birth defects alone but the biggest concern is ultimately stillbirth. You also don't have the same fertility options because being obese can really jack up your hormones, so if you lose weight SURPRISE, you might just have better luck getting pregnant. You also don't have the same great options for genetic testing during pregnancy because the bigger you are, the harder it can be to either a) perform a procedure, or b) even get a damn test result because the concentration of whatever we are looking for will be much lower because you're so big. /rant
3. Custody - well, what do you expect to happen if your BMI is 50+? How is that not dangerous?
4. Life-saving procedures - Wait, wait, wait. So this bitch is honestly confused as to why these are not as available? Uh, maybe because it's such a big risk to your life that it doesn't make sense! Why the F would you perform a risky operation on someone when they're already a huge risk because so many things can go wrong due to their body being all out of whack from too much poundage?! Ridiculous.
Finally, as someone who has been battling chubbiness pretty much her entire life, this website pisses me off. I guess I don't understand why someone wouldn't strive to at least be somewhat healthy and attempt to get to a good weight, even if it happens to be a little above your "best" BMI. And I damn sure don't blame someone for all my fucking problems just because they're thin. She needs to own to the fact that she doesn't want to change, but wants all the benefits as if she really is healthy. Bitch please. Admit you like cake and be done with it. 3/13/2013 7:11:04 AM
