Now the Kingston Trio was a great band. Why don't kids listen to them anymore?

vinylbandit would hate my father-in-law

Live music is the only thing he thinks about when he tries to pick a place for dinner. If the restaurant's website says "live music" that is where he wants to go.

He lives in Florida. Don't tell me you want to go to Tir Na Nog just because they have live music. Their food is shit. No live band in the world is going to make that garbage taste better.

We've tried to take him to a bunch of different restaurants in Raleigh but each one is a hardsell if they don't have live music.

i enjoy a place with a live band more than a DJ or stock jukebox any day. And I try to at least find out who is playing and what their style is before choosing to go to that bar/restaurant/gin joint.

but i'm not going to a concert. the music will always be the sideshow to the company i am with.

Live, absolutely. Often garbage.

They have some good records, though.

how many Dead shows did you go to? I went to one. I don't remember a whole lot about it. I got lost from my group the minute we got there, and I wondered around aimlessly during the entire show, only to run into my group after the show (this was back before cell phones, of course). then we hitch-hiked back to the hotel in a VW van. It was quite an experience.

The cool thing about playing metal, is that out of the 5 people who ever go to a doom metal show in raleigh, all 5 of them are there for the show even if its just so they can argue about why one of the bands sucks. Not many people wander into Cough at slims which is a shame because Cough is the fucking shit

Doom metal forever

I mean the kind of person who thinks any live music is good music. The kind of person who would go see the worst cover band ever because they're a "live band," even if the world's best DJ was on at the bar next door.

Nothing wrong with a good party band.

But the concept of a cover band is not indiscriminately better than a great DJ.

^ Look, someone who cares so little, they took the time to post about it. Quaint!

A DJ who is ruling it. Playing great record after great record, nonstop for hours. An unimpeachable selector.

Of course it's totally subjective. But some people think that a live band is always better than a DJ, even if the live band sucks and the DJ is awesome.

I understand the desire for live music. I just don't understand the lack of discrimination. ANY live music shouldn't be something to shoot for.

One night, many years ago, I went to this place called Jackpot near the IHOP on Hillsborough St. Man, that night the DJ was really ruling it! He was playing great record after great record, nonstop for hours. I was incredibly impressed by and really enjoyed the sequencing and selections.
