on a ship you'll probably suffocate or get trampled if you're in a situation where you are able to get 3rd degree burns.

for water you could try a solar still, but unless the sea is glass it won't be very effective, your fresh water will just slosh out. instead, just pick someone weak and drink their blood.

I think the main thing to bring are MRE and toilet bags.

I am not sure about how to stockpile water though, it is bulky, heavy, and would take up lots of room in your suitcase. Maybe its worth checking an extra bag for a survival kit. You can probably get them to waive the fees if you threaten to complain to CNN that they wont let you check your survival kit.

Do you want to depend on the staff of a powerless cruise-liner that is floundering in the water to provide for your basic needs?

It was a container/cargo ship, not a cruise ship. But several are dead.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/27/world/americas/bahamas-cruise-line-fire/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Quote :
"
(CNN) -- A Royal Caribbean International ship was diverted to a Bahamas port Monday after an early morning fire sent guests to the decks with life jackets under the night sky.
The Grandeur of the Seas cruise ship, under its own power but escorted by the U.S. Coast Guard, arrived in Freeport hours after the fire, which the company said began in a mooring area about 2:50 a.m. and was extinguished just before 5 a.m.
The ship, with 2,224 guests and 796 crew members, initially was headed to CocoCay, Bahamas, but was redirected to Freeport for evaluation, Royal Caribbean said.
Two guests were treated after fainting, and medical staff also responded to reports of high blood pressure and an ankle sprain, Royal Caribbean said.
Royal Caribbean spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez said she didn't have further information about the medical reports, "but the ship has told us that there are no medical emergencies onboard."
Video captured by passengers Danielle Miller and Katie Coleman shows guests gathered on a deck, wearing orange life jackets.
"We're on deck right now, 3 a.m., in our life jackets. Not a drill, not a joke," a narrator in Miller's video says.
The fire started on the aft mooring deck and spread to the fourth deck at the crew lounge area before it was extinguished, Coast Guard spokeswoman Marilyn Fajardo said. Information on the fire's cause wasn't available, she said.
The ship arrived at Freeport about 10:15 a.m., Royal Caribbean said. Throughout, the power, propulsion and communications systems were uninterrupted, the company said.
Cruise passengers get bill of rights
"In an abundance of caution, the captain deemed it necessary to muster all guests at their assembly stations during the incident," the company said in a news release. "All ... guests and ... crew have been accounted for, and guests have since been allowed to return to most staterooms and public areas.'
Passengers will be able to get off the ship at Freeport if they choose, Martinez said. The company's president and CEO, Adam Goldstein, and other Royal Caribbean officials were heading to Freeport on Monday morning to meet guests, she said.
Grandeur of the Seas departed Baltimore, Maryland, on Friday for a seven-day trip with scheduled port calls to Port Canaveral, Florida; CocoCay; and Nassau in the Bahamas, the company said.
CocoCay is Royal Caribbean's "private island paradise" in the Bahamas, according to its website.
The 916-foot-long ship was launched in December 1996 and refurbished in May 2012, the company said.
A number of cruise ship incidents have made headlines in the past year and a half.
In January 2012, 32 people died when the Costa Concordia capsized off Italy's coast.
In February this year, an engine room fire left the Carnival Triumph adrift in the Gulf of Mexico, with passengers reporting overflowing toilets and human waste running down the walls in some parts of the ship.
On a March cruise, the Carnival Dream lost power and some toilets stopped working. And this month, authorities say, a man and a woman on the Carnival Spirit fell overboard off Australia's coast; they are presumed dead.

it only hits the bahamas.

go to tampa and you'll hit up the Caribbean. much better islands and much better cruise.

Charleston is a nice town but the bahamas aint much to write home about.

driving or flying?

We are open to going out of anywhere but going out of SC (live in Raleigh) makes things easier obviously.

Our window to leave is June 23-25, 5 days or so and don't really have to many crazy preferences. Just want something where we can relax during the day and have fun at night. I just started looking around and there are a lot of options it seems. The reviews don't help, one guy says food was amazing next review says food sucks.

I came to TWW ... My most trusted source for advice.

I'd drive a little further to Tampa honestly.

The Carib compared to bahamas is miles apart in terms of everything. 5 day is perfect. look into Grand Cayman and Cozumel or something like that.

Its about 9 hours for the drive but well worth it.

If its your first time on a cruise, bahamas wont be bad but be sure to step it up next time and you'll know exactly what i mean.

You could also look into flights on spirit out of myrtle beach into somewhere like st thomas or PRico and do an all inclusive resort.

Did an all inclusive recently so looking to do cruise to change it up.

We don't mind driving to Tampa or flying to Miami if it makes it significantly better.

I think we can make any destination work more concerned about a fun boat.

Also I'm high jacking this thread for this because it didn't seem like my personal travel needed its own thread.

My brother JUST did the Charleston-Bahamas ship late last month. He said the ship was great, the food was definitely good, et cetera. He said there weren't many kids, though a lot of that was from segregation to the kids areas.

The Bahamas kinda blow though. It's... just not that great of a place, the locals will hound you like nothing else.

Ya I know Bahamas sucks but not many options for when we are trying to leave. I think it is easier to find fun things to do on the islands for a few hours than be on a crappy boat where most time is spent.

Having done both, this statement does not compute to me

I 2nd somewhere other than the Bahamas. I have done the Carnival cruise out of Jacksonville. Bahamas were OK...best part was the day we spent at Atlantis.

The Fantasy is Carnival's oldest and one of the smallest ships. So don't expect too many bells and whistles compared to the behemoth ships they advertise on TV. I second the Bahamas not being the best itinerary, but if you have never been it is worth going once. Check out the Atlantis resort in Nassau, it is pretty awesome.

There are quite a few other ports on the East Coast and you can find cheap airfare if you time it right. It won't help you this time if you are going in June, but Southwest is running a sale for $99 one way from RDU to MCO right now for travel starting in August. Also Baltimore has a port I've left out of before, and flights there are $49 one way.

The best thing about leaving out of SC is the price and being able to drive, but honestly Raleigh to Port Canaveral or MD is not bad at all and you can probably find a better boat at those ports. My wife and I booked a cruise on the Dream for early September leaving out of Canaveral and we are planning on driving.

Go for Carib.

the bahamas suck.

make the drive to Tampa. its well worth it.

and like someone said earlier...all inclusive on the island for a few days > cruise. any day all day.

I've done a LOT of carib traveling

carib>bahamas all day every day even with a hurricane

Just looked at the Carnival site and that 5-day out of Charleston ($589/pp) will be more expensive for the cruise alone than a 6-day out of Ft. Lauderdale ($439/pp) that goes to MUCH better ports. As long as you're not driving a gas guzzler, you'll pay about the same with the extra drive and go to better places.

did a 7 day cruise a few years ago and went out of Tampa to the Caribbean. sailed on the Legend which was pretty damn nice. me and my girlfriend flew (because of being in NJ) into Tampa and then took a taxi from the airport to the port. but if you can drive to there, do it. there is a big parking garage right across from the port for all the travelers to leave their cars. the area is also nice with lots of restaurants and shops if you need to kill time before or after. and yes, Caribbean > Bahamas.
