"North Buncombe should be higher than #11"

As a graduate of North Buncombe, I'm honestly shocked it made the list at all. I guess a lot can change in 13 years, though.

US News & World Report said they will not rank East Chapel Hill High School because of the achievement gap between African/American and Latino students compared to Caucasian, Asian students. This has been the case since 2009.

They have done this for other high schools as well. As a result of this, Chapel Hill Carrboro Schools are dedicating more resources to close the gap. Additionally, NAACP has repeatedly been against adding more honor courses as they argue the courses are only filled mostly by Caucasian students.

If the Asian & Caucasian students had performed a lot poorer, then East Chapel Hill High school might be ranked.

As someone who went to one of the other Rowan County schools, I can definitely say Salisbury should be very high.

No, not everyone gets the same education, (but we are talking about NC & Rowan County). But it's pretty much the only high school in Rowan where the kids can get a chance to excel. (The smallest HS in the county, but the most AP courses) Even being adequate by triangle standards, says something.

The class size is smaller there and they get a crazy amount of big scholarship winners there.

^^ That's somewhat counterintuitively biased towards schools which are de facto segregated. You can't have poorly performing black and Latino students if you don't have any black or Latino students.

My high school is #14...that's cool.

^^and my high school was very diverse...at least when I was there..

Just checked and it says 45% of the school is minority...there still is a lot of diversity there. Goes to show that any school can excel...no matter what the make up of the students are.

^^^ I agree. The other part of it is that the black and Latinos are performing a lot better than a lot of other schools in the area. The problem is the whites, asians, etc. are performing so well, SAT, etc. that the gap is too big, according to US News & World Report.

If East Chapel Hill High School dumbed down the competitive non-African American/Latino populations, then US News & World Report would agree to rank them again. Removing honors & advanced courses might help achieve this. NAACP might be onto something with their complaint of all the honors courses they have.

No idea how my high school made #19 on the list. These kinds of lists are only useful to people who care about lists and what could be argued as irrelevant data. Who cares how many AP courses a high school offers if the teachers teaching them are ineffective?

^^^They factor in the background of the students when determining whether or not the scores are competitive. So if it "goes to show" anything, it's that applying different standards for minority/low income students helps the rankings of schools with a lot of minority/low income students. And, if you get to hand pick your students from the largest/best educated minority applicant pool in the state, then you should expect to be at the top (Durham School of the Arts). I'm not saying it's wrong or anything, but I wish people would try to understand the methodology before sharing what this list "goes to show."

Anyway, if you click the "college readiness" tab twice, you'll see the schools ranked more in the order that you would expect.

But really, they should just start calling these the "Best Students" or "Best AP Teachers" rankings. Also, we gotta admit there's not that big of a difference between a lot of these schools. It's pretty much way above, above, way below, below, and average. Trying to make definitive distinctions beyond that is what makes these rankings so contrived.
