I think that it's brilliant to come out with her story in a news paper article. She's controlled the situation by releasing her story on her own and in her own words.

Lol diva is someone's sexual preference their sole identifier?

Surely you realize Rosie is fat, annoying, and homely which you would have to respect as completely opposite of the perception of Jolie

No. I think that she quite successfully handled the story and controlled the situation with her OpEd piece. She put her story out there on her own and in her own words. The media and tabloids didn't get ahold of it first. As far as PR is concerned, she's come out on top and I think that it's partially due to her releasing the story on her own.

It's still a crap story

It's just more interesting than talking about 3 surviving kidnap victims that no one really cared about for ten years or the coon guy that is making a name off it

It's timely and she knows the media will deem her heroic

I knew Orac would be all over this. He is a blogger, but he is also a surgical breast oncologist. I was thinking this same thing, when the story came out:

Quote :
"And it’s true. Jolie is a special case. We don’t see too many BRCA1 carriers. In Jolie’s case, bilateral mastectomy was entirely appropriate and medically indicated. That’s not always the case for a lot of bilateral mastectomies that are being done these days. Not surprisingly, part of what drove Jolie’s decision was the death of her mother at a young age (56). In any case, I’m not alone in being a bit worried that this announcement will provoke a run of patients demanding what Angelina Jolie had, regardless of whether it’s appropriate or not."

http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2013/05/15/quack-view-of-preventing-breast-cancer-versus-reality/

Read on. He also discusses some other issues in her decision.

Preventative surgery that removes a sexualized portion of anatomy??

Where are the men's groups calling the procedure barbaric, and dehumanizing it's practitioners?

no "massacrectomy.org" telling us all about how necrotic cancerous breasts are fashionable in europe and third world countries?

Maybe im just out of the loop

"A Story about the Body" by Robert Hass

The young composer, working that summer at an artist’s colony, had watched her for a week. She was Japanese, a painter, almost sixty, and he thought he was in love with her. He loved her work, and her work was like the way she moved her body, used her hands, looked at him directly when she mused and considered answers to his questions. One night, walking back from a concert, they came to her door and she turned to him and said, “I think you would like to have me. I would like that too, but I must tell you that I have had a double mastectomy,” and when he didn’t understand, “I’ve lost both my breasts.” The radiance that he had carried around in his belly and chest cavity--like music--withered quickly, and he made himself look at her when he said, “I’m sorry I don’t think I could.” He walked back to his own cabin through the pines, and in the morning he found a small blue bowl on the porch outside his door. It looked to be full of rose petals, but he found when he picked it up that the rose petals were on top; the rest of the bowl--she must have swept the corners of her studio--was full of dead bees.

Among the community of boob-enthusiasts, some of us are brought to rage by the mere notion of "breast reduction" (I'm not, but I've seen terms like "butcher" regularly thrown around to describe the practitioners and phrases like "back exercises" used to second-guess women who seek them); I'd imagine there actually are groups that dehumanize plastic surgeons who perform breast-reductions, and by extension also those surgeons who perform prophylactic mastectomies.

My girlfriend showed me this article a couple of weeks ago: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/28/magazine/our-feel-good-war-on-breast-cancer.html?pagewanted=1&_r=0

It's a pretty good read. Orenstein doesn't come down on one side or the other, but she makes the case that many women treat (or take preventative steps to avoid) breast cancer with questionable results. Breast cancer, it turns out, isn't just one type of cancer; there are several varieties, some of which will never grow or become harmful. Regardless, these varieties can show up in a mammogram, and positive tests have driven many women to take pretty extreme actions when it may not have been necessary.

Uh, Christina Applegate was praised for it. She was on Good Morning America and Oprah and has spoken about it numerous times. She just chose a different stage to speak on than Angelina Jolie. It's been like 7 years so everyone is done talking about it.

howbout that leading sentence from the ovary article

Quote :
"Angelina Jolie's brave medical journey is far from over."

first of all , BUH?

Secondly, i was under the impression that "brave" meant "having or showing courage"

Would it be a legitimate question to ask if doing everything in your power to prevent your own suffering counts as courage?

no-one courageously applies the brakes on their car do they

have you ever had the courage enough to eat chicken not currently floating in the fryer

just suspect wording

There is so much misinformation in this thread, it's insane.

First of all, Angelina Jolie is doing the recommended steps made by many, many groups including the NCCN for a women with a BRCA1 mutation. What people don't realize is having a mutation in BRCA1 can cause a more aggressive/harder to treat version of breast cancer, aka triple negative. Also, considering her history where her mother died of ovarian cancer at such a a young age, she is making a wise decision regarding both the ovaries and the breasts. Having this mastectomy reduces her risk of breast cancer by over 90%. Removing her ovaries reduces the risk of breast cancer by over 50% and of course over 90% for ovarian cancer.

Now, on to the testing. I hate to call people out, but for the love of god dear women of tdub, DO NOT GET 23 AND ME IN PLACE OF BRACAnalysis! Their company ONLY looks at the founder mutations in the Ashkenazi Jewizh population as Myriad has a patent on the way to test the entire BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. It is not in ANY WAY a substitute for the legit test if you have no Jewish history. And as for those wanting to know if insurance covers it, I guarantee if someone else is living in your family that would be better to test they will give you a hard time. Those companies have very strict rules about who is covered and who isn't for this test, and Tricare only recently started covering it again at all. For those interested, I'd be happy to help you navigate everything and find out if its worth it for you to have the testing. Or, as an even better option since I'm in Florida now, I'd be happy to get you in touch with a local genetic counselor.

And as a general pet peeve (can't remember if anyone said it here or on the comments in the article), everyone has these genes. Having the actual gene protects you as it's a tumor suppressor - it's when you have a limited amount of protection (I.e., hereditary mutation making you more susceptible) that it's a problem.

For those who think I'm full of it and don't know what I'm talking about, I'd be happy to send you the recommended screening guidelines by the NCCN for women who are genetically predisposed to breast cancer. It also covers the other forms of hereditary cancers, which many people don't realize are out there, such as Cowden syndrome. On the flip side, Lynch syndrome (hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer) can cause ovarian cancer.

Anyway, that's my soap box. Consider it your friendly PSA from I believe the only genetic counselor on this site. (Though I'm pretty sure one guy's wife is also a GC).

I'm not talking about the people who were obviously kidding around, I'm talking about the ones that were trying to discuss it seriously. I know it's rare in chit chat, but it occasionally happens

^ they can't ever guarantee they got every single cell out of the area that would contain the mutation. But, if you have a good surgeon, it's unlikely they left residual tissue. That risk goes with any surgery removing cancer.
