I don't think there are many cities of Raleigh's size that can compare. If you try and compare Raleigh to NY, Chicago, LA or Seattle it will always lose. But for the >500K population, it's about as good as it gets. Especially when you consider it's proximity to other southern cities like Chapel Hill and Durham.
When it comes to the things that matter; nightlife, jobs, crime, schools, culture, restaurants, etc. it'll never be the best in one category, but its well rounded enough to be at the top. i.e., Atlanta may have the best nightlife in the south, but it also has one of the worst crime rates. 5/30/2013 11:59:37 PM

Raleigh nightlife is just frat bros, sorrostitutes in 70 lbs of makeup singing wagon wheel and country boys in woodland camo driving around blaring lil wayne in their dad's trucks.
Chapel Hill nightlife is all broads (who don't watch army wives) bar hopping and checkin out shows at da cradle.

Raleigh does have a relatively good nightlife. I'd take Raleigh Times over the douchebag Malibu kids with Maserati's and no job that infest my neighborhood It does suck you can't find many/any Ramen, Korean, or other "fringe" ethnic food that's cheap.
Alas, living somewhere is more than the restaurants and nightlife.

Raleigh is an amazing city.
Proximity to the beach/mountains Distinct night life districts (Warehouse, Glenwood, Fayetteville St., Hillsborough St., Moore Square/City Market, Five Points, North Raleigh, Midtown/North Hills) Multiple large music venues and free concerts in Moore Square State museums, symphony, opera, performing arts centers The state fair All of the benefits of being the capital city - courts, state government, legislature, etc. Parks, lakes, rivers and an interconnected well-kept green way system Economically diverse and fast growing in public, private, and non-profit sectors Many colleges, graduate schools, vocational schools, community colleges, adult learning programs Growing art scene Continually improving transportation (rail, new highways, bussing systems, etc.) and plans for a light rail
The most important aspect of all of this: the cost of living is low and purchasing power is high.
Yes, Washington DC is a fun city but you pay $texas to do anything there. For the price of a one bedroom apartment in a neighboring area like Arlington, you can rent a house in Raleigh, or a condo downtown. We can go out and easily find $3 micro drafts whereas in DC you'll be lucky to find a happy hour for $5. Want to go out to dinner? Just show up at the best restaurants in town. In NYC? Book a month ahead of time for the best places and be prepared to pay insane amounts of money for alcohol. 5/31/2013 12:03:05 PM

basic economics. things that more people want cost more. things that less people want cost less. You could live in pueblo colorado for a fraction of what you spend in raleigh.

All those reasons are why Raleigh looks good on paper. It's "close" to "mountains" and the beach, but good luck doing both in the same day or during the week if you want a decent paying job. In California for example, you can surf in the morning and ski in the afternoon on the weekend. Or do one before work while holding down a real job. There are natural mountain areas everywhere. The art scene is world class and established, and a large portion of up and coming bands are here playing small venues every night. Those "strengths" are me-too, we built a museum and have four artists are not why Raleigh is a decent place to live. They are more like the minor skill listed on a resume you hope the interviewer won't ask you about.
The colleges, down to earth vibe and standard of living relative to cost of living are all good reasons to live there. Experiencing a cultural center and seeing nature are not. Don't get me started on having busses downtown. You can walk from one side to another in less time than it takes to ride the bus; that was clearly a scam to line someone's pockets

You don't go to the best restaurants in NYC weekly unless you're a billionaire, or at least a 10s of millionaire. Raleigh has nothing comparable to that, but does have really good/innovative casual dining. If you want to go to a popular spot go immediately after work.
Even in Raleigh it's hard to go to the trendy spots. Ever try to eat at Poole's at 7 PM?

I kind of meant an either/or. You can do both on the weekend for sure. During the week you can just hike/paraglide, or surf in the morning and then go to work. I ate dinner on top of a mountain in Malibu and watched the sunset on Wednesday. Good luck getting to Boone after work.
I typically stream 2 or 3 thoughts into one sentence. Apologies.
