a lot of people say the same about beer though and while I don't particularly like wine and can't appreciate the subtleties, I notice the subtleties in beer a lot. Just different palates I guess

Everything I've read (and by read I mean I'm pretty sure I heard this on npr like 3 months ago) says that you can't really distinguish any subtleties in wine after 2 or 3 sips

my boyfriend is a [talented and respected] winemaker and he would also agree with this (with a few exceptions).

that said, since we've been together and he's been keeping me fully stocked on wines running the gamut from his (retail) $10-$12 bottles all the way through the $30-50 bottles, I can DEFINITELY tell a difference and I DEFINITELY have a preference. there are a number of factors in quality, from barreling to the quality of grapes, and you often get what you pay for. but not always. marketing is a huge factor.

his advice - find what you like, and drink what you like, even if it's two buck chuck.

but how much better can it be? not better enough to be worth $50+...maybe it's because my palate is "bad" or i haven't been properly "trained" to enjoy wine, but i'm 100% okay with that

i can enjoy a three-buck chuck for what it is, just like i can enjoy a corona for what it is...nothing spectacular, but drinkable and enjoyable as long as you're not trying to turn it into an experience"

For me, there's definitely a world of difference between a $100 or $200 bottle and one that's $40 or $50. I think the most obvious difference for me has been in terms of champagne, which isn't something one drinks all the time anyway.

I will say that as far as money goes, there are a large number of great bottles in that $40-50 range. But depending on the type of wine you like, sometimes it doesn't make sense to spend that much: one of my more recent favorites is a Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc that's only $25.

The cheapest wine we regularly drink is $8-$10, without alteration. We also do sangria with really cheap stuff.

"Whatever Barefoot costs. Usually between $6-$7."

Truth. This is probably the cheapest wine I've ever had, but it's good. I usually just drink they're moscato though, and I'm no wine snob otherwise.

My roommate got a sweet red wine from Trader Joe's for ~$5, I have no idea what it was but it was one of the better red wines I've had
