what if he's the one who started the fight with her?
what if she tried hard to get him to come home, but he refused, and ended up walking away?

what's a 4'6" 90lb chick going to do? throw him over her shoulder and put him in a cab?

One would think that if he made it those first few blocks after mlk on (Wilmington st) he'd be home free

It would have taken him over 5 hours.

"RALEIGH (WTVD) -- Police say the body of a missing man was found along Interstate 40 westbound Tuesday afternoon.

Weston Vandemerwe, 23, had been reported missing Sunday afternoon. His death is now being investigated as a hit-and-run collision.

STORY: Search under way for missing Apex man
Police say work crews found his body just over a guard rail at the on-ramp to I-40 from Hammond Road Tuesday afternoon. Traffic in the area was backed up for miles as officers put up crime scene tape along the shoulder of the interstate and detectives pored over the area.

Vandemerwe's family made a public plea Monday after the East Carolina University graduate went missing over the weekend.

He was last seen around 1:30 a.m. Saturday in The Oxford Bar in Raleigh after arguing with his girlfriend, who hailed a cab.

Family members believe Vandemerwe left The Oxford and was walking home to Apex when he disappeared.

Students from Shaw University said they saw Vandemerwe near the Raleigh Convention Center around 2 a.m. Saturday. They said he appeared drunk, and was laying in the bushes.

From there, he somehow made his way toward the interstate where police say he was hit by a car.

Anyone with information that might assist the investigation of the case should call Raleigh CrimeStoppers at (919) 834-HELP or visit http://www.raleighcrimestoppers.org for text and e-mail reporting options."

wonder if his injuries were survivable if he had gotten prompt medical attention

that hit and run driver could have possibly saved him by calling it in. :/

"RALEIGH, N.C. — A body found along westbound Interstate 40/440 in Raleigh Tuesday afternoon has been identified as a missing Apex man, police said. The death of Weston Michael Vandemerwe, 23, is being investigated as a hit-and-run crash.

A work crew found the body near a guardrail along the highway, between Hammond Road and South Saunders Street, around 4 p.m. At least 15 police officers from both Raleigh and Apex, as well as the City-County Bureau of Identification, responded to the scene before confirming it was Vandemerwe.

The ramp from Hammond Road and the right two lanes of the highway were closed for several hours, causing traffic backups in the area.

Vandemerwe left The Oxford bar on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, friends said. He and his girlfriend, Kaitlyn Holmes, argued outside the bar, and she got in a cab. Holmes said she assumed Vandemerwe would also take a cab home. He had left his car at a friend's house in Cary.

Vandemerwe's mother, Becky Daly, said two Shaw University students told her that they saw him lying on the ground outside the convention center early Saturday, but that he declined any help.

He was reported missing Sunday afternoon.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 919-834-4357. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for tips that help solve cases, and callers can remain anonymous."

Um. I'll admit I'm not the smartest person around but does anyone know why he didn't just take a cab? Like that whole area is all cabs at that time.

^^ it's not a cheap ride from Raleigh to Apex...I mean, just going from downtown Raleigh to State campus runs about $20 last time I checked (which was like a decade ago)

granted, trying to walk it is pretty crazy, but he was drunk. when you're drunk it's easy to make over-ambitious plans.

The driver probably didn't call it in because they were drunk, had a suspended license or any number of similar reasons hit and run drivers do what they do. Hopefully it was caught on a traffic cam or something.

I once walked from downtown Raleigh all the way to my apartment in Cary after getting lost from my friends and wandering around drunk until I sobered up enough to figure out where I was. My cell phone was dead and I didnt have enough on me to buy a cab, couldnt find one where I was anyway. I almost asked a cop to give me a ride home but was afraid they'd charge me with being drunk in public or something. I tried to pass out in DH Hill but the doors were locked.

Last Thursday I meet a guy who had walked from Westchester, PA to Raleigh. We played guitar for a few hours and my buddy gave him a place to crash for the night.

Yeah I've had some pretty stupid and crazy walks from Downtown Raleigh back towards campus when I used to live on Maiden Ln, and a couple even longer to where I live now. I've only been blackout and tried to make that walk once, but that one time was enough for me to not drink for a while. I totally understand his thought process, but walking on a highway is something I'd like to think I wouldn't do no matter how much I'd had to drink. Wish he'd just stayed in that bush til he'd sobered up. Damn.

^stupid and crazy because of the distance or because of how drunk you were? Cuz you know.... It's really not that far.

Ditto on the staying in the bush number.

Since I've moved away from campus because of the distance - hated myself about halfway home each time. Only once because of how much I'd had to drink - that one turned into a roughhhh night.

I refuse to believe that you have ever paid $20 for a cab ride from campus to downtown. and on the off chance you have, you got hustled on an absurd level.

and I've walked home from downtown (a little over 4 miles) plenty of times before. always a good idea at the time.

It's entirely possible that the driver could be found not guilty of manslaughter charges (but guilty of a hit and run of course). I remember a case many years ago where some drunk guy wandered onto hillsborough st and was hit and killed by a car. The driver was found not guilty because the drunk just just wandered out there and he didn't have time to react. Could be what happened here.
