I wonder what the amount of money is that would be considered enough to live a nice, good life and then compare that to a lot of the executive/ceo pay around the country. I'm pretty sure 27 mil a year is over that.
It comes down to greed, both personal and corporate. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night making that kind of money knowing that my company wasn't paying enough to the people at the bottom.

Well you are not CEO material then.
A lot of rich people donate millions of dollars per year too, so I guess that takes the edge off of making so much monies.

Depending on the franchise part of that 14% is rent because they own the building. Licensing/service fees really aren't that high(at least in mcd's case) it's the rent. 8/29/2013 12:11:30 PM

39 hours in a week is nothing, go get a second job
I worked 60+ hour weeks at 2 part-time jobs to pay my way through school, and I payed out-of-pocket for my own health insurance at the same damn time.
Even as a professional, a 40 hour work week rarely exists in my experience. 8/29/2013 12:13:09 PM

You also have to consider that a lot of people that work for McD's can't get other jobs due to various reasons (Felony convictions, no Diploma/GED, etc). So yeah, it may only be minimum wage, but it's better than nothing. 8/29/2013 12:13:49 PM

Just heard an interview on NPR with a local lady who is striking. She said she has been working fast food for 15 YEARS! What kind of schmuck works fast food for 15 years and still gets paid minimum wage?
I have a hard time garnering any sympathy for these people. 8/29/2013 12:25:39 PM

People shouldn't aspire to turn a fast-food job into a career, but there should be more opportunities for advances and raises. if you're a loyal worker who's been there for 15 years, you shouldn't be making the same salary that you started on.

everyone's most basic needs (food and shelter) should be provided at no cost by the government
if we're going to bother having a government at least it should provide a modest standard of living to every citizen - otherwise what is the point of living in the most powerful country in the world?
anyone who wants more should work for it 8/29/2013 12:30:25 PM

If you've been working in fast food for 15 years and you're still working the drive-through, you're doing something wrong.
I can't say for sure what supervisors or managers make, but my vague recollection is that it's not bad money.

^^ An average McD's GM makes about $40k, and that's being hired from the outside with 3-5 years management experience. I'm not sure how long it would take a "crew member" to work their way up to management.

its not supply unless 90% of people want the job. Also, if no job is paying minimum wage and minimum wage is raised, there won't be a flux of new people for this job because their job will become adequate as well.
Quote : | "dumbass wage jockeys that don't understand economics. if minimum wages goes to 15/hr, purchasing power decreases because of a little thing called inflation. just wait til you're making 15/hr and the dollar menu becomes the 2 dollar menu, and gas is 7 dollars a gallon" | we understand economics. we just don't agree with the morality of it. Stealing from poor people, the environment and the developing world are all great economic principles.
Part of this is on the consumer. Stop shoppping/ eating at places that use these good economic practices and shop at places that offer more career based employment and higher salaries. Increasing demand there will mean more jobs at those places.
I rather pay more for whole foods to know that extra money is going to a local farmer, a high-paid cashier, a career stocker, and environmental sustainability as opposed to shopping at walmart to save money that was STOLEN from a sweatshop in china, a factory farm, all of the workers at walmart and the local environmental well-being.
There is no such thing as a 1 dollar burger. You're just stealing the money to pay for the rest of it. 8/29/2013 1:21:33 PM

A large percentage of their employees have 'flex schedules' (not what they call it, but i remember they had a specific term for it), wherein they don't really have set shift. So you couldn't work first shift at McDonalds and then work second shift somewhere else because they might schedule you at any time. 8/29/2013 1:28:08 PM

Assuming that the "trickle down" theory is correct. One could argue that if these employees were paid more they would spend that money quicker and get it into the economy more efficiently than a millionaire CEO that hides the money overseas and doesn't pay taxes. Also raising minimum wage doesn't cause inflation, it has been raised several times and inflation remained minimal. It could contribute to it, but simply raising minimum wage wouldn't directly cause gas to double in price.
From my point of view, I'd rather the minimum wage be $15 per hour, because those people would move up income tax brackets and pay more taxes(they don't have the means to hide it or get some clever accountant) and that would generate more tax income which is needed, and will help alleviate the tax burden on the middle class(me). So if you ask me, I don't want to pay more taxes and if the rich people pay the poor people more, than they both contribute more to taxes directly or indirectly and that should help me more than our current system where poor people pay nothing, and rich people pay "nothing" and I pay a lot. 8/29/2013 1:36:45 PM

Quite a few people don't understand basic economics, apparently. It's immoral to pay people for work, and it's moral to prohibit work below a certain price? I don't think you want to make the argument from morality here, I'd stick to the bad economics. 8/29/2013 1:39:07 PM

Minimum wage workers already make up such a miniscule fraction of the overall purchasing power of the country that even a doubling in their wages would be completely insignificant in the grand scheme of things. 8/29/2013 1:46:28 PM

try doubling the minimum wage and see what that gets you. of course 5.15 to 5.25 is going to have a "minimal" impact. we're talking about fucking doubling it here. that won't just be a blip; there are severe economic consequences for doubling the purchasing power of the lower class 8/29/2013 1:47:50 PM
