i'm sorry i don't know enough about cheap fishing tackle for you

i can make plenty of suggestions and tell you what i use, but it's more than you want to spend.

here's exactly what i would do if i wanted to cheap out. i'd buy the cheapest 1-piece graphite rod with a cork handle that i could find. i'd buy the cheapest, smoothest spinning reel with infinite stops (shimano calls this "super-stopper") that i could find. those are my minimum requirements.

i used to cheap out too. then, for christmas when i was about 14, my dad got me the nicest combo i'd ever had. it was a 6'6" medium 1-piece graphite shimano rod with a cork handle, a quality reel seat, and Fuji guides. it had a 2000 Sedona with the super-stopper and real ball bearings. i never looked back. the rod was eventually broken while flounder fishing on Bogue Inlet Pier. the reel is a little loose after hundreds upon hundreds of trout, flounder, puppy drum, and stripers, but i still have it on a short little rod i use for shad fishing.

So what kind of fishing line do you prefer?

What do you think of this combo?

So you think the 2500 version and a 6'6 pole would be better for panfish and some larger fish?

i don't pick a rod based on what type of fish i'm going after. i pick a rod based on how i plan to fish. sometimes i fish for flounder throwing artificials, sometimes i fish for flounder with live bait. i don't use the same rod and reel because the requirements are different. i couldn't bring myself to target panfish with a 4000 reel on a 7' medium rod and i couldn't bring myself to target catfish with a 2500 on a 6'6" medium light.

Yo I got to graduate to different rods for different fishes maynne! If you could build two rods for around $100 (each), one for panfish and other for larger fish, what would be your choices?

dude, you're talking to someone who a shit pile of fishing rods. i've never counted, but it's gotta be over 60 rods. i can't wrap my head around these questions, quite honestly.

hell, i've got like a dozen 2000 or 2500 size reels on 6'6" medium rods just so swapping lures means grabbing a different rod.

Goddamn son you got a few I can have for free??

Reason I am asking a lot of question is that I am trying to learn about this stuff in more detail. I can't graduate if I don't know anything more than what I know now, right?

Get on craigslist or local fishing forums and buy some used gear for cheap. It will be better quality and less money than buying new stuff.

Hell, most of my trolling gear and bottom fishing gear I buy used because I know its going to get beat up over the years.

Yea dude, there are always tons of wives selling off their husbands fishing shit. I just bought two offshore jigging rods that were $300 each for $100 each

Whats the best bait to use on a single hook for catfish? I don't like catching them with a treble hook since I want to release them with the least trauma as possible.

Looks like a golden shiner to me. They make good live bait.

Think the Cape Fear around Wilmington is too muddy right now to try for some stripers?

the northeast cape fear will be cleaner. you just have to fish falling tide, because rising tide pushes muddy cape fear water up the northeast cape fear.

but i think it's a little early for the stripers. i'm sure some are around, they are there in some capacity year-round, but i don't start targeting them until december.

once the water clears up, trout and puppy drum should be biting just downstream of downtown wilmington.

I was in Wilmington for the day anyway and decided to try it. The river was rolling pretty fast, even with trees floating down but I got two

how big and what bait?

[Edited on October 13, 2015 at 9:08 PM. Reason : that river always rolls ridiculously fast. slack tide lasts about 5 minutes.]

Both between 18 and 22, and I was just using an umbrella rig with grub worms on jig heads. Just tossed it out and let the river provide the action
