What's more important is which side is more rabid.

"but what are these people going to do who don't have their keys or phones"

uh, probably find a ride home. i don't think letting people back into buildings to get keys is a high priority for police.

-Nats game is canceled

-Evidence now pointing to a single gunman.

Not going to rake through a Reddit comment section, but I haven't said made any gun control arguments today. So, no, I didn't lose and I didn't win, because I haven't played.

Edit: Okay, I'll bite: http://www.reddit.com/r/news/comments/1mhxhk/active_shooter_sought_at_washington_dc_navy_yard/?sort=old

Second comment in the mega thread was pro-gun control.

Why are you bullshitting? You know what this always devolves into. If there is a shooting, there will be a gun control debate. Period. It doesn't matter what side you're on, that's simply what happens.

your post was exactly what you are criticizing others for, idiot

the bad thing about this being one gunman is that now the conspiracy theories start. alex jones will have a post about what happened to the other gunman. geniusxboy will read that post and offer free pizza to anyone with information.

Seriously, the time we got locked down over here due to a shooter running around and taking hostages the police pretty much came and said lock your doors and stay in the building until we come by and say its ok. We dont care if you want to eat lunch or go home on time, tough shit.

Well if the black guy posted earlier is indeed the [sole] perpetrator we can rule out any racial motive.

"all of the reports are about rapid gunfire, which is how we reach the conclusion that it was a semi-automatic weapon"

i'm glad that they had all that evidence to decide that it was the kind of gun that most guns are

one of the guns he used he took from a security guard, a handgun probably 9mm. he then waited to ambush the first responders.

witnesses reported that he had a shotgun and AR style rifle, he then shot a guard and took their handgun

It would be great if someone who is actually familiar with the Navy Yard could post. I would think that there'd be some kind of security checkpoint where it's impossible to pass through unless the guard inputs a PIN or something. The fact that this happened makes it sound like someone dropped the ball in a tragic way.

You guys are thinking of this place like its a base.

It's not. Well, I mean it has the accoutrements of one from one hundred years ago. Think of it as Navy Corporate. Tons of contractors/civilians. You have to flash a badge to get in the front gate, and then do the same thing with a magnetometer in 197. Easy to drive on with hidden weapons if you really wanted, and then shoot the guard at the individual building entrance.

He is not right. Limiting the ease with which it takes to get an assault weapon (or any weapon in general) is not attacking responsible gun owners by any means.

damn I feel terrible hearing the stories of people basically saying that they were talking to a guy one second, and then the next second he gets shot in the head out of nowhere. Just insane that this happens. Are you all hearing these stories in the States?

wait... Washington DC has some of the strictest gun control laws in the nation... how could this have happened???

(but more importantly I hope for the well being of those injured and the families of the victims)

It is pretty easy to obtain weapons from areas with less strict gun control and to bring them into places like DC if one is hell bent on committing a violent crime or mass murder.

I wonder if someone from HR fucked up. Every place I've worked de-activated those badges before you were out of the building on your last day.

Of course you can always just follow another group of people into the building and pretend to flash the badge against the card reader as you go in. Nobody really pays attention. Corporate security is mostly just for show.

^ As I mentioned above, he would only need to have flashed it at the gate guard to get on the WNY campus. If I recall, he would have had to scan or swipe it in Building 197 as he went through the magnetometer in the building lobby, but it sounds like he let the AR-15 serve as his ID at that point.

It's been a few years since I worked in 197, so I can't recall for certain about swiping, but he would have been subject to slightly more scrutiny in the building. The gate access at the entrance to the Navy Yard was always laughably lax.
