There are morons commenting on this article and in others I read yesterday with "So the fans can yell at the refs, but they're not allowed to respond back?!?!"
Of course the ref is not supposed to respond to fans, nor is the coach, nor the players.... but especially the ref, whose only job is to call a fair game. They should completely ignore the fans. If the fans get to unruly, that's Security's job, not the refs.

he might be a good ref - in terms of actually officiating a game and stuff. but he clearly has huge ego that has gotten him in trouble. which you can't have if you're gonna maintain impartiality (and especially the appearance of impartiality).

So many 'tards commenting on all the articles about this, complaining that this really wasn't "racist", and people are "butthurt about bullshit political correctness" and "what about free speech?", but fail to see that none of this is really the issue. Fans have yelled and complained about refs since the beginning of sports, but most refs are professional enough to know that they're there to ref the game as fair as they can, and shouldn't react or respond to fans in the crowd. If they did, they'd spend the entire game yelling back at the fans.

i'm friends with some SID's and such. one of them posted something on facebook about Hess getting cut off from the ACC and AAC. a guy responds "Terrible news - just calls games and not arrogant" - I asked him if he was joking and then linked to Patrick Stevens syracuse.com article on 10 times Hess has been out of line in the last 3 years (since the googs and corch incident). his response? "Don't need to read article - know all ACC officials personally - know what their about and their egos"

i laughed...then I looked up who the guy was. turns out...he's a Dookie. specifically their Asst Director of Ticket Operations.

I am SHOCKED a duke athletics official likes Karl Hess.

if a defender is moving parallel to the ball handler across court and said offensive guy quickly changes course and smashes into defender they call a foul of the defense which is BS. should be a no call or foul on offense. [/rant]

yeah offensive players get the benefit of the doubt 10 out of 10 times. if the offensive player initiates contact, it should not be a defensive foul...yet it's almost always called on the defense (except in the case of a charge in the open floor or a blatant push off) is the defender not entitled to a spot on the floor without being run into?
