all levels of government should stop programs such as WIC, welfare, etc. as well. Privately funded groups can give those benefits and that taxpayer money can go to education.

^^I played soccer in middle school, football and soccer in high school and did marching band. I also did Honors Society, Math Club, and Physics Club. I also did club sports up to the U-16 level.

I didn't learn any lessons that required stadium lights, expensive road trips, coaches with $10k salary supplements, etc... And in Marching Band I learned that you can put on a $100k marching show without any public money.

how did you do marching band and football? isn't marching at halftime one of the main duties of the band?

No, the halftime shows are usually just dumb filler things. Its all about competitions and since they are usually on Saturday (or maybe always on Saturday) its possible to do both. There were 6 or 7 of us that played football and did marching band.

Yeah, I want to make it clear that I actually support that position. I don't really know the breakdown on how much money we are spending on athletics vs. classrooms, but I think its likely we are spending a little too much on it. Our priorities should clearly favor classrooms, and that's certainly where a VAST majority of our public education money should go.

But I also don't think we should throw the baby out with the bath water. I'm open to other ways we can structure extra-curriculars to make them cheaper, but still retain their value. I do think if we totally unlinked them from the high school though, we may actually lose some of the help they provide.

Seems like most of the issue is about football since it's one of the sports that costs a ridiculous amount of money. And it won't be an issue for much longer once kids stop playing it at youth levels.

I went to a 5A high school that had tremendous facilities but that is because we shared them with all the other schools in the district so we could pool the money together and build a nice complex. Other than that we didn't take any fancy trips to play any sports. A lot of the stuff was built with private funding as well and just like with college football we had boosters who would give money to the program for things like coaches salary.

north carolina is actually one of the not too terrible states, so turning this into an anecdote contest is an unimaginative waste of time

He's just burying his already non-existent credibility, confirming himself as a troll, and making everyone hate him even more.

Hopefully he keeps up the creepy personal attacks and gets banned however.

He's not a very amusing alias.

its not an issue of being 1avish, its an issue of paying for bus, driver, fue1, and insurance. and that is only one sma11 expense. in texas, some coaches are paid by the city parks and rec and some receive sa1ary supp1ements from the school district worth many thousands of dollars. and then there is insurance and maintenance, etc...

it a11 equals out to a disproportionate1y high cost per student ath1ete that "benefits" on1y a few students at the expense of academics for everyone

Lol, this is cracking me up.

I will forever read dtownral's posts in Madea's voice.

What I meant earlier dtownral was you posting pictures from his gallery. I could care less that you're typing like you have cotton in your mouth.

Or a big fat dick (more likely).

So dtownrariegh, do you suggest we get rid of band and orchestra as well? They took more trips than any sports team at my school. How about the debate team? They went all over the country.

I'm wit the socialist on this one. The sports should be paid for by booster club fundraisers, etc.

The only devil's advocate I'll play here is to ask you to consider the high school band also. LOTS of money goes into buying instrumentation, and you also have to provide travel, and possibly travel insurance?? I dont know, but anyway, school band is a large expense, and I don't think we should get rid of it.

^^^ I don't think marching band should be paid by public funds, but I'm not sure where it is. Is that common in other states? Around here they get almost no public money, and none that I know of specifically for marching band. I think there is academic merits in the arts and band, but not necessarily marching band. And marching bands are great at raising money, for a competitive show season they can raise $100k

Those are the high school equivalent of clubs, and they're almost entirely funded by parents/booster organizations.

Why is the conversation always about parts of education we can cut to give the important things the money they need. Why not just make everything better. We are trying to educated the whole person, not just the core subjects. Having big stadiums with large crowds makes the sport much more intense. The more intense it is, the better a simulation of life it is.

Sports are probably the best microcosm of life in all of schools. No other subject teaches you skills that translate directly towards success in life.
-hard work
-preparation
-team work
-personal responsibility
-collective responsibility
-ethics
-discipline
-respect
.
All of these things are learned everyday in sports and I'm not sure any other class can teach them.

You are completely out of touch and ignorant to the fact that many areas lack available disposable income for sports donations. Schools in poor cities are already underfunded/out of money, the parents have little money and the communities have little money. Taking away sports would ruin communities by putting kids out on the street.

If anything, we need to be increasing thee monies for sports so that more people can participate. The biggest problem with high school sports is that you have to be good to play. Everyone doesn't have to be varsity but there should be as many levels of teams as there is student interest in a sport.
