That's the ride I was on. Doesn't seem like it was 11 years ago. Luckily only one was injured and 1 died instantly. Hope everyone comes out of this alive.

The last ride-accident at the state fair was in 2002. Considering the # of people who have ridden a ride since then (100s of 1000s?), that's not a bad safety record for a fair ride. But yeah, that's scary. I rode and upside-down ride for the first time in 10+ years during my visit this year.

"fixing to do" something is perfectly acceptable in the local (and broader southern regional) dialect.

Yup, it's proper usage according to Merriam-Webster. Good enough for me. - http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fix

^^that's relative.

i mean, i don't care if the sheriff uses common southern vernacular

but it's not proper grammar and shouldn't be acceptable in an educational setting.

In another 5 years I wouldn't be surprised if "LOL" and "OMG" are in Webster's (if they aren't already), and kids coming out of college will start using them in professional settings and documents.

The further decline of America and its educational system.

Switch on fair ride failed days before accident

Quote :
"On Monday... a switch that locks riders in their seats failed on the ride, and it was shut down. After the operators repaired the switch, state inspectors examined it and found it to be working fine, so the ride resumed operation.

Chambers said it's too early to tell if something similar occurred Thursday or if the ride had a different malfunction."

http://www.wral.com/authorities-expected-to-give-update-on-investigation-into-state-fair-ride-accident/13041734/

Raleigh, N.C. — A Georgia man is facing charges after a ride accident at the NC State Fair that injured five people, according to officials.

Timothy Dwayne Tutterrow, 46, of Quitman, Ga., has been charged with three felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury, Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison announced at a news conference Saturday.

Five people were injured in the accident, which involved the Vortex on the lower midway behind the Expo Center. Witness accounts indicated the ride had stopped and people were off loading when the ride restarted, according to officials.

The victims were taken to WakeMed Hospital. Two have been released and three remain hospitalized. They are Anthony Gorham, 29; Kisha Gorham, 39; and a 14-year-old juvenile.

“After inspection of the ride, we determined that it had been tampered with and critical safety devices were compromised,” Harrison said.

^ I don't know I guess it is when you tamper with it and make it your "weapon" to inflict injury on those on board.
