If there's seriously nothing more to this than all the stuff that happened a year ago, why is it news now? Just because Leak wants to talk all of a sudden?

the tagline for the story on twitter is: NC State was proactive

you guys talking about WRAL before even seeing the piece are ridiculous

have you seen the teaser commercial they've been running for the last several days? it's pretty sensationalized and make it look like a lot of really shady stuff is happening at NC State. Regardless of what the actual story is about, the commercial was pretty irresponsible. Some people won't even watch it, they'll just remember the commercial.

Are we allowed to talk about the commercial?

sure, but that teaser commercial is no different from the other investigative reports they've done in the past

it's just this time it hits close to home since we are all State fans

but the handwringing outrage that people have had before having any idea what the report will look like/conclude is absurd

it's a total persecution complex

"x is just the same as y" doesn't make x okay. that's the UNCCH "everybody else is doing it"-Way™

i have a serious problem with the way they've advertised it too, and for good reason. none of the mouth breathing public will look into it any further. i heard their ad on the radio yesterday and couldn't help but wonder why they felt it was necessary. it doesn't give any context at all, and i don't recall hearing anything like that out of them with the UNCCH investigation(s).

it's BS how WRAL is handling it, and IMO people have a right to be pissed about it. breaking out the tinfoil hats might be a little overboard, but there's a very blatant double standard with this instance.

despite the fact that there was dozens of investigative reports that they could have done on the unc scandal, i don't recall one single time they ran a teaser commercial similar to this one, and certainly didn't do it days in advance about breaking news (although they had tons of "breaking news" instances where they could have done it. prove me wrong, but i'm pretty sure you're just wrong about that.

and i don't really see any handwrining outrage on here. i see you saying it, but i don't see it. i'm sure there's plenty of crazy on pack pride, but all i'm doing is recognizing WRAL's irresponsible journalism covering the two "scandals" and the silliness of the teaser commercial. But I understand that you're way above the persecution complex.

how do you know that the WRAL story isn't about how proactive State has been, and how far they have gone to protect their student athletes? how do you know its not a positive store.

you don't

so getting pissed right now is dumb

we know that the teaser commercial definitely tries to make it look like shady stuff is going on. we're talking about the commercial. we can talk about the commercial, because we've seen the commercial (multiple times, over and over). we'll see what the story is, hopefully the focus is about how proactive state has been. but the commercial (and the article about the story linked on the first page) make it sound like a lot of shady stuff is going on.

why would WRAL run their own investigation on UNC while the NCAA was in the middle of a real, actual investigation?

they have done multiple investigative reports covering various fields over the years, and all of them have had ads run promoting the newscast it'll air on, always days in advance

The thing is, however small the cj Leslie stuff was is nothing compared to UNC. If they have not done a single investigative report on UNC( and I don't mean small reports regurgitating what PP and N&O did) there is no reason for them to wake up only now and do a months long investigation on a non story. It screams double standard and favoritism. They would get more national recognition investigating Fats and the boosters than beating this dead horse. Its a no brainer. How can they not realize that? Are their higher ups that stupid? Or do they not want to piss off their Walmart viewer base?

There were threads for a decade on here claiming the N&O hated State too and would always cover for UNC.

This persecution nonsense, too, will pass.

The N&O is under new leadership now. And most of their sports and beat writers are UNC grads anyway. Its the Dan Kane show that has single handedly kept the scandal alive... God bless him...

Newsflash: lots of communications and journalism majors went to UNC. And I got news for you... Lots also went to Syracuse so get used to another ACC school to have multiple grads in the business.

What I meant was there is going to be bias among sports writers and beat writers when covering their fav school. I'm fine with that. But when you have to report the UNC scandal whixh is beyond sports plus you have a chance to gain national recognition by investigating fake classes, Tami and Fats but still pass on it, then you've got a huge problem. An integrity problem. Wade Hargrove is chairman of the BOT and also a media lawyer and I believe part owner of WRAL. If that's the case I fully understand why he wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole. Can't blame him.

Not much there.

Obviously Leak has a sweetheart deal with the agency and does steer players there but no proof of that and neither would ever admit it.

Biggest piece there is that it makes it hard for me to believe David Amerson is literate but you don't need to read to play college ball.

BULLSHIT! WRAL time and time again avoided reporting the facts that were being exposed by the N&O. It was laughable to look at the difference between the two.

cant believe people deny media bias

fact: people are biased

fact: some schools have a lot of journalism and broadcasting majors

just look at the fucking idiocy early in the season when ESPN hyped up a complete trash northwestern team

there is a difference between the possibility of bias and bias actually being present. No one denies that bias COULD occur, but they are saying they dont think it is occurring in this case. Just because it can occur doesnt mean anything someone says is automatically biased

once again, for the 1000th time, just because you dont like it doesnt make it "trolling"

and I am not even saying if this guy is or is not biased. I'm just saying that he isnt automatically biased in his career work just because there exists the possibility that he is biased or because of his personal allegiance. Sports writers are sports fans. They liked teams growing up, they went to school, they went to games as students and go to games now, but that does not automatically equal "anything they write is biased, end of conversation."

Being an investigative journalist for WRAL isn't much better, they traffic in fear-mongering and hype rather than substance and investigative prowess.

The DTH has been critical of athletics throughout the scandal, and they have a long history of being critical of university administration. Juts because someone is a UNC J school grad doesn't mean they are supportive of UNC throughout the scandal, in fact it was mostly the opposite.

Let's just say that the three months of investigation that went into this uncovered two guys buying cars AFTER their last college game. And something about Leak's businesses being looked into buy the authorities. That's it. All NCSU fans want is the same three months to investigate Hairston/Fats/McDonald/Spencer Howard/mouthguards.

It's laughable that competent people would suggest WRAL's coverage of the UNC scandal (all 13 of them) is on the same level as this. 500+ grade changes/forged signatures over 15+ years for players on National Title teams and two people in the department get blamed? No story there.

Leak also isn't that bright to call any more attention to himself than there already is. I hope he didn't actually think WRAL was trying to exonerate him. The jabs about his businesses should be enough to for him to never talk to the media again.

And remember that the Daily Tarheel was part of the group that sued to get records released in the the news and observer publishing company, et al. versus UNC cases. You know who else was a part of that lawsuit? WRAL was also part of the et al.

this story wasn't about unc/ncsu bias. it was about stirring the pot. it was about ratings. it was about them being able to create more commercials saying that they're on top of shit in the triangle!. it was nothing but rehashing old information.

But this wasn't an "OH MY GOD STATE IS CHEATING TOO" story....this was more of a story about how difficult it is for universities to control agents/runners/boosters and how the onus is truly on the athletes to follow the rules and stay out of trouble. The university can do everything in it's power to distance itself from boosters, but at the end of the day if the athletes want to, they can still seek these people out rather easily.

^I agree. And hell in many ways the story is accurate. Its hard to tell a player, especially a really good one who knows you need him, to stay the fuck away from somebody or there will be real consequences, up to dismissal from the team. Look at all the shit PJ pulled. But Roy and this season were uberfucked if they dropped Hairston, so his threats were empty and he's back.

But regardless of how it really came out, the commercials sounded like worse shit was going on at NCSU than even had happened at UNC. Which is patently false. If he wanted to make it less biased, I think he should have maybe mentioned "Even UNC has issues keeping boosters and others like Fats Thomas away from its players." But he totally steered clear of that, which I think would have given it a much more unbiased opinion. However it seems like WRAL is not really interested in digging into stories around UNC, even when they are handed to them on a silver platter via PackPride.

^ I guess folks just want a 3 month "investigation" into the PJ/Fats/McDonald stuff the same way WRAL "investigated" Leak for 3 months to show "breaking news" that he cosigned cars with players AFTER they were done playing.

Ultimately, in the next week or so I guess we will get more clarity on the UNC stuff because they will either be dressing out for a big game or not and then the NCAA will chime in when they feel like it. What's it going to look like for WRAL if there is something more to the story than the two Fats/PJ rentals and they spent 90 days unearthing nothing about Leak? I think that's a legitimate question to be asked when the time comes.
