the only thing i can attribute it to is fear of the new/unknown, or fear of entering into a less enjoyable relationship. There must be some parts of the "bad relationship" that still provide pleasure. People are inherently afraid of losing what they have.

Either that or their self-esteem is so low that being alone would only churn it into the ground even further, creating an inescapable negative feedback loop.
