Don't take that too lightly. I know a good many family friends and personal friends who have come out of really tough times in life by getting out and being active. A close friend's father died and is going through a hard patch in life and she's remedied it by going out and doing stuff.
Eat healthy, be active, and be social. There's so much evidence out there that eating right, being extremely active, and getting out and doing things solves so many of lifes problems. If you're not doing all of the above then you're not trying or need to try harder. No excuses.

I've been starting to get those judging looks from my family as well, especially since a younger cousin has been married for 2+ years now and is starting to plan for their first kid.
My parents tried to have a sit down with my about my refusal to have kids. Their cornerstone argument was 'well don't you want someone to take care of you when you're older'? Which is funny because they had this conversation out at dinner with myself and my Great Aunt who never married and never had kids and lives successfully on her own at 87.
They then fell back onto their alternate argument that I made such a good Scout Leader back in grade school, and that's just like having kids.
I feel like I won.
I'm mostly happy though. I wouldn't mind a few more bucks and maybe a lady to share my life with but I'm not sweating it. My main worry is that I've always been very content being on my own, and having a fairly small (but close) sphere of friends, but that I'll still wind up all by my lonesome once they 'move on' down their life paths. 1/7/2014 11:47:22 AM

Care to clarify? All I'm doing is giving some good advice to get over hard times from what I know myself and what I've seen in family and friends. Am I missing something? 1/7/2014 12:29:12 PM

nah, you're right. staying active does make you feel better in many instances. divorce. death in the family. depression. it's much better than moping around and feeling sorry for yourself. 1/7/2014 12:31:48 PM

Exercise, and getting out do help with some of the symptoms of depression, being in a slump, etc. However it doesn't directly address the root problem. If you are stuck in a shitty job, going for a run after work may relieve some stress, but it doesn't make your job better.
Also, knowing DDK personally, she already gets out and about quite often. 1/7/2014 12:47:45 PM

yea i don't think working out is the end all be all. I worked out last night and still felt shitty until someone made a comment about eating a fuck ton of tacos. idk why that made me feel better. it just did. 1/7/2014 12:54:54 PM

Oh I know it's not the end all solution but long term eating healthier and being active motivates you to seek out a better job, meet more people, and overall be a happier person. If you're a healthier human being you naturally want to seek out the better things in life.
All I'm saying is if you're already active and eat healthy then great stick with it and expand upon that and go find a new activity to do. If you're not then you know what needs to change.
Simply put sitting around moping doesn't help. (Not that I'm saying anyone is doing that). 1/7/2014 1:06:13 PM

so you lie to yourself? that's kinda weird.
i just remind myself that I've got it pretty good, relatively, and feeling sorry for myself doesn't help, it only makes things worse. 1/7/2014 2:20:46 PM

maybe, but it beats being depressed
the unfortunate side effect is when you go seeking companionship again you have to quit being a taint 1/7/2014 2:46:23 PM
