Alton has legitimate skills at making a good tv show, he's not a chef. If we were talking about physics shows, Alton Brown would be Morgan Freeman. 1/25/2014 8:23:15 PM

His show would be so much better without him on it. Not a chef I guess, but Anthony Bourdain is a dick. 1/25/2014 8:28:25 PM

How exactly are we defining a Chef, here? Currently cooking for a living?
Anthony Bourdain spent most of his life cooking for a living 1/25/2014 8:40:18 PM

What is considered to be the defining difference between chef & cook? Training? Job title?

Chefs create, cooks cook what chefs tell them.
Tony (I saw him at a show in Vegas so I can call him Tony) and Alton were never more than charismatic line cooks 1/26/2014 1:09:34 AM

I'm curious as to both how and why chefs became the new celebrity du jour.
Does it speak to just how fucking fat this country has gotten or is there some legitimate reason we laud people who are good with a pan? 1/27/2014 12:07:22 PM

The same reason we laud people who are good with a football. It's entertaining to some people. 1/27/2014 12:13:04 PM

You been living under a rock? Food (delicious, healthy, fresh, etc) has become extremely popular these days. It's no longer chains and steakhouses...restaurants and going out to eat is now a form of entertainment, an experience...and chefs are the head figures in that. And people also want to re-create these delicious meals at their house. They want to grow these foods in their back yard and be part of this farm-to-table movement.
The food landscape has changed more in the past 5-10 years than it has in the previous 100...IMO at least. 1/27/2014 12:26:56 PM

my gf loves cooking shows. i can tolerate some of them, and some of it's informative (i do like to cook), but overall it's very boring to me to watch somebody cook and talk about it. 1/27/2014 12:31:59 PM

^^ It changed a hell of a lot in that 100 years, but it was going in the opposite direction. 1/27/2014 12:34:45 PM

I think it's worth noting that celebrity chefs have existed a lot longer than the recent Food Network stuff. Julia Child, Martha Stewart, Justin "I gar-on-tee!" Wilson. I think it's more that the reality television and the advent of the Food Network has brought them into the public eye more.
Also, jbrick83's comment about dining becoming an experience/entertainment is valid. 1/27/2014 12:37:19 PM

Just commenting on what skwinkle and jbrick were saying, I'm glad that the food industry has made a 180 these past 10-15 years. Coming back to fresh ingredients and the "farm to table" mindset is growing again after the fast food craze of the 80's and 90's.
I think new age connectivity with the internet and cable television boom has opened eyes to a whole new world of food ideas that would have never made it to the masses through traditional media. 1/27/2014 12:56:53 PM
