The editor makes some valid points in his article about the inappropriate nature of some of the humor in past editions. However, IMO, that's a challenge to improve on the past, not scrap a fun tradition. I'm starting to think the reason they didn't do the Daily Tar Hell is that they didn't have the talent to do it well.

thanks to all the problems at UNC right now, the DTHell had plenty of material to use without needing to be offensive or overly sophomoric. if the editor can't hold the writers to a certain level that's their fault, its not a problem with the tradition.

Look, no offense to the former Technician writers on here, but really the Technician has two jobs: Provide a crossword puzzle and sudoku every day, and do the Daily Tar Hell once a year. I have literally seen an above-the-fold front page article with a picture of kittens with the caption "Soooooooooooooo cute!"

If you don't like racist/homophobic humor in the Daily Tar Hell that is totally understandable and you should push your writers to be more funny. If you didn't sign up for the Technician to write jokes, find some people that want to write jokes. It's not that hard.

EDIT: How is the editor of the Technician selected anyway? I'm not sure it's right that one student can make the decision to kill a tradition just because he doesn't like how it's been done in the past.

I would also add that all of this sounds like he didn't really realize how important it would be to people and blew it off because he didn't feel like investing the time and now he is trying to justify himself.

If that was truly his premeditated reason that he decided not to run a DTH, he should have addressed his thoughts in the issue when it would usually have come out. He knew people would notice and be mad. If he was trying to make a statement about the historical basis of the jokes because of his belief that they're in poor taste, he should have actually made a statement about it instead of saying nothing.

I'm sure he wanted this reaction. I'm not sure whether his explanation is the whole truth or a reason written in hindsight to cover for not having a better one.

Yea, fuck this guy. I was looking forward to reading it. Only time of the year I give a damn about the Technician. Working at Chapel Hill and reading DTH most days, it was nice to read the Daily Tar Hell. But I guess it wasn't "important" enough for him.

By the way I noticed somebody had vandalized the Technician Wiki page. I feel this column and lack of a Daily Tar Hell should definitely be put under the Controversies header.

What about an engineering club that produces robots to compete in competition every year. That's not their jobs. Are they working hard? yes. Everyday? probably. Is it their job? No, It's college. They are working for a club where a Univ has granted them access to tools and other perks that they wouldn't have access to unless they were part of the Univ club in order to gain experience in the real world.

When I was in school we produced television content for WolfTV before it was a club. Were we producing content for the entire campus to see? yes Was it my job? No. It's college....
