I'm sad that some people didn't make it. Honestly I figured anyone falling out would just quit
We sat and watched everyone run by at about mile 5. We made posters.

^. Man, I hear ya. Seriously. Makes you wonder why people don't just quit instead of running to their grave.
I bet some of it is just the notion that any athlete knows.... Sometimes you just have to work through the pain. I know with distance running, a lot of it is a mental toughness game. Convincing yourself that you're not that tired or hurt, and that you can keep going. That, and I'm sure none of these guys had ever died before.... So they didnt know what it felt like/ what was happening ![](images/beatup.gif) 4/14/2014 7:55:05 PM

I saw a couple funny ones like Hurry, they're running out of beer and Always give 100%...except when giving blood. Also a Jimmy V bighead. The supporters were really awesome. 4/14/2014 9:16:49 PM

I'm completely unimpressed by distance running with no time limits or time frames attached. A couple of years ago I did the rock n' roll half marathon with no prep. I was running semi regularly (5k a couple times a week) up until about January and then work got crazy so I didn't do anything until the day of the race. Finished right around the 2 hour mark, whoopity do. It was no picnic, but it's not the hardest thing I've ever done physically by any stretch. The worst part by far was the bloody nipples I ended the race with.
It's something that literally anyone can do if they just go out there and do a minimal amount of prep or without if you're in decent-ish shape.
A full marathon probably takes a bit more, but honestly it seems like just getting your body used to the idea of the distance involved is all there is to it. It's not taxing from a cardio standpoint the way interval training is, and it requires almost no athleticism. I can't imagine it's any more taxing than a solo century on a road bike or swimming a couple of miles.
The obsession with marathons is perplexing. I guess it's good that people are setting goals and training for it, but don't expect me to be impressed that you jogged for 5 hours.

Yeah, I'd rather set an athletic bucket list goal for climbing a mountain, rather than running a long distance. But everyone has their preferences. 4/15/2014 9:31:19 AM

Successfully running a marathon is definitely an accomplishment. That shit is not easy, and takes more than a casual amount of training and preperation. And there is a time limit; you are required to stay above a certain pace or they pull you off the course.

I don't think running a marathon has anything to do with bucket lists, I think its all about trying to look impressive on facebook and twitter. 4/15/2014 9:51:19 AM

Be it attention, fitness goals, or an oval sticker with a number on it, who really cares why? Whatever motivation people need to get off the couch and haul their fat ass across the land, I'm happy for them that they're doing it. 4/15/2014 9:59:11 AM

I lived downtown and had my roads closed all the time for races and I didn't care. I went out and cheered for runners. Or I was running myself.
But I'm not everyone else, and I can understand how it could get old to others. 4/15/2014 10:04:01 AM

i don't mind closures that bring business and vitality to downtown, and this marathon certainly did, but a lot of the closures are for small stuff that doesn't do shit except annoy people.

Was talking to a buddy of mine yesterday who ran in the race. He was right next to the 31 year old when he died and said the guy just dropped mid-stride without any kind of warning. They had been in the same group of runners going about the same pace for a while and he said the guy didn't show any sign of struggling, just kept on going no issues, then all of a sudden it was like someone shot him in the back of the head and he went down, hitting the ground face first. He was positive this guy was dead before he hit. 4/16/2014 10:08:00 AM

Do we know if these guys had pre-existing heart conditions or anything? Or did they just push their body to a limit they weren't prepared for? 4/16/2014 10:19:54 AM

I would assume that someone who was running pretty good until they just dropped dead out of the blue had an undiagnosed heart condition.
