Totally forgot I used to work for a huge racists asshole when I was a kid. He owned a small retail shop and would go off about black people and immigrants anytime the store was empty. I was making like $7/hr there, guess I should have asked for a $10K/hr raise.

Just finished last nights Daily Show. They showed a clip where Fox News reported that he had asked her to record him, and that she has hundreds of hours of his rants, because he didn't want to forget anything.

Also, apparently he had no problem if she, his gf, slept with black dudes....his issue was that she shared a picture of herself sitting next to one (Magic I think) at a game.

You joking? He's stripped his players dignity, it's hard to put a price on that. He's reminded them and all black people that with all their success and fame, they're just dumb black people to him that he'll buy and sell. This self doubt and feeling of being judged is the most powerful mechanism of racism, countless studies have demonstrated this. Just the feeling of being judged causes anyone to perform worse, and we have a scenario where a team of people that has made a guy billions is still viewed as trash to that guy. If it's not doing your job well, what dignity is there to being a hard working black person? This seed of doubt is now planted in people's minds. Does their boss, whom they've worked hard for, actually like them or value them? When statistics says he probably doesn't and anecdotes reaffirm this, people get angry. It's what causes civil unrest.

He's reminding everyone that lived through the civil rights era, or whose parents and grandparents did, that even though blacks get rejected from jobs because they're black, black kids get more harshly punished by teachers because of their skin, black people get more harshly treated by the legal system, black inmates get murdered by the government via the death penalty more ths whites, there may not be a silver lining that they badly want to be there, of a society that institutionally still oppresses them; this makes it harder. It means there is more fighting to do, there's more weeding out of people in positions of power who use this power for oppression.

It's like watching a long, dark depressing movie, think you're getting to the end,then realizing it might not be a happy ending.

Take the time to have some empathy, it's ignorant to pretend that series of individual events reinforced by statistics doesn't paint the picture of an America that has gotten much better, but still treats it's black citizens as outsiders to some extent. If this wasn't upsetting, you wouldn't see people of color making an issue out of it. This is upsetting to people, and rather than sitting back and just saying "oh it's no big deal, just some random person" perhaps listen to why this community of disparate people can all describe the same instances of aggression and oppression against them? Why is it so hard to just listen and accept what people are saying?

You are right though that this doesn't change much,blacks already know that powerful people secretly work against them, and this just confirms that. The question is do they continue to accept it, or fight back? Do they let one of the few places where blacks can see other successful blacks be sullied by the idea that owners are just exploiting them and that fame, money, and respect still can't grant you equality?
