I knew my hormones were messed up form not eating enough carbs, but I could never decide what carbs to eat. Thanks to this thread, I took lewoods' advice and went for it with white rice. It's only been two days, and my energy is already back. I'm able to eat less overall and do way more at the gym. I haven't had to chug coffee. And I'm much more productive at work and well into the evenings. It's awesome!
So thanks, guys, for being lame ass nutritional nerds. Reading all your garbage was worth it. 5/16/2014 9:38:04 AM

This is because our bodies are made of up of billions of cells that are naturally alkaline according to it’s ph balance. When we consume more acidic foods (i.e. many of Coca-Cola’s low calorie drinks) vs. alkaline foods this upsets the balance and leads to all sorts of trouble for our bodies and the organs that regulate our metabolism and weight." |
The stupid here is incredible: significant parts of you are acidic, including the water that supports every cell in your body.

My rant:
The biggest issue I have with the majority if not all of those studies is they don't usually use any diet controls. I'd like to see similar studies with a control on the Mediterranean diet, paleo diet, raw, etc. Most of the red meat studies have been using a control with a population on a pretty standard American diet high in processed foods and sugar.
If a population gets a huge portion of their carbs from bread or pasta and they're saying red meat leads to cancer well yeah... that's like saying riding your bike every day on a highway leads to fatal accidents. It's not the biking that kills you it's the highway. Silly analogy but all I could think of.
Either way I try to avoid red meat and stick to chicken and fish. 5/20/2014 6:38:14 PM

Quote : | " it has so many healthy all star ingredients – One of which is Apple Cider Vinegar. This powerhouse vinegar has been used for centuries as a natural remedy to cure allergies (including pet, food and environmental), sinus infections, acne, high cholesterol, flu, chronic fatigue, candida, acid reflux, sore throats, contact dermatitis, arthritis, and gout.
Additionally, apple cider vinegar can burn some serious booty. It is widely used for weight control, it helps break down fat in the body and can boost your metabolism. It lowers glucose levels – reducing insulin spikes that can lead to weight gain. If you have never tried it in a salad dressing – start today! Remember to buy the good stuff – Bragg’s makes a great version that is organic, raw and unfiltered. The pasteurized version doesn’t have the same qualities so you will be missing out if you don’t buy the right kind." |

I prefer balsamic.
Does Apple Cider vinegar really reduce blood glucose levels or does it just not spike them because there's no sugar in the dressing (whereas most non-fat dressings have lots of sugar).

Quote : | "Chow Babe Read up brewers. Sorry, this may be long (I need a blog)
I'm re-reading the Charlotte Observer article on Food Babe because something bothered me. From the article:
"Her campaigns have attracted increasing scrutiny, particularly on what critics call her lack of food science credentials. In her recent post about beer ingredients, for instance, critics point to how she makes common ingredients seem alarming, such as the use of isinglass in brewing. Isinglass is a protein derived from fish that’s been used since the 18th century to remove yeast and clarify beer.
Her claim about 'an ingredient found in antifreeze' being added to beer also draws criticism. Actually, the ingredient used is propylene glycol alginate, a kelp derivative used to stabilize head foam, not propylene glycol, a coolant. She later clarified this on her website. ... What does Hari say about charges of mistakes? 'I’ve never claimed to be a nutritionist,' she says. 'I’m an investigator.'"
She didn't clarify. She got caught being sensationalist, at best, and lying (or being not competent) at worst. She's neither nutritionist nor investigator. This is the text of her clarification, from June 18, 2014:
"There are a few blog posts circulating that indicate propylene glycol is used in the external chilling system at breweries and that it’s never is added to beer. They go as far to say that the only way it could be in beer is if there is a tank leak. Well, I’m not talking about leaking tanks here. The chemical Propylene Glycol Alginate (PGA) is added to some beers as a stabilizer for foam control and it is sold as an additive under various commercial names such as Stabilfoam. "
Well, the problem is she WAS talking about propylene glycol as an ingredient! She did it in her original post going after the beer companies on July 17, 2013 "The Shocking Ingredients in Beer." She listed it as a possible ingredient and linked it with anti-freeze. Then, the beer blogging community responded. I haven't tracked down all the beer blog responses but Maureen Ogle's "What's in YOUR Beer? Or, the Dangers of Dumbassery" appeared in August of 2013. The brewers responded to her absurd assertion that propylene glycol was in beer BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT SHE WROTE.
About a year later, she goes on a new campaign and mentions the beer blogs claim that she was talking about beer coolant systems and says that she isn't talking about coolant systems. But, she does so in a way that does not acknowledge her earlier mistake/lie/exaggeration from the previous failed campaign at all. Is it a clarification? Maybe. But if it is it is done in the most duplicitous, self-serving manner possible and with absolutely ZERO admission of her culpability for getting it wrong. Had she listed the correct ingredient (which, btw, would have been less salacious for her 2013 campaign) then brewers would have addressed it in their criticisms of her work.
That nut is a piece of work. And she still hasn't apologized for the stupid and needless campaign against Samuel Adams this summer to get them to post their ingredients THAT WERE POSTED LONG BEFORE HER CAMPAIGN. Some investigator.
Edited to add: Another reason why this is important. When ABCnews.com reported on her latest beer campaign, the headline was "What's in Your Beer? Fish Bladder and Antifreeze Ingredient?" If you google antifreeze AND beer, plenty of articles come up. There are likely, a lot of people that think there is antifreeze or an ingredient of antifreeze found in beer. For someone who has as one of her goals as making our food supply more transparent, she has certainly done a good job of screwing up what the public thinks is in beer." |

Don't get me wrong I love Neil deGrasse Tyson but isn't it more complex then he's making it? It's not black and white. Humans 'genetically' modifying food by agriculture and natural selection is (right?) quite different then genetically modifying foods rapidly in labs to produce results that would otherwise take decades of selective breeding to accomplish.
I mean at the rate the world's population is growing I'm all for finding better and more efficient ways to safety grow crops for large populations but I think people should understand the difference.
Neil deGrasse Tyson sounds like he's saying GMOs are GMOs regardless of how they're made. I think the issue is a lot more complex than that. ![](images/rolleyes.gif) 8/3/2014 11:54:55 PM

what needs to be done is finding better and more efficient ways of distributing and conserving food.

no, that's incorrect. the products produced by cisgenesis could be exactly reproduced by conventional breeding, given enough time and adequate numbers of subjects.
