The part I don't get is the NFL's position. He was arrested and his case dealt with according to law. Why does he in effect get fired and barred from getting another job? Yeah, I know, PR, public figure, etc. but it the indefinite suspension seems excessive. 9/10/2014 11:26:13 PM

^^I mean, being an abusive criminal seems like a trait that an employer could fire/not hire you for if part of your job was to be a role model/in the public eye. though that is giving the NFL way too much credit.

I'm not really calling her anything. I was pointing out the dumb logic behind the false binary of either #whyistayed/#whyileft an abusive relationship bs floating around on Twitter and some posters on TWW that say things like it's NEVER okay to hit a woman. Obviously it's a lot more complicated than that. 9/11/2014 10:30:32 AM

He can get another job, just not with the NFL for a while, if ever. The same exact thing would happen at most companies. You could go work for a competitor perhaps, but not any branches of the company of which you embarrassed through your personal conduct. 9/11/2014 11:55:46 AM

The NFL front office looks absolutely stupid in all of this. They suspend Rice for two weeks, say they screwed up, change their rulings stating the penalty for first offenses will now be six week suspensions, and then the day the video gets released they basically kick Rice out of the NFL with no plans to reinstate for a first offense that he was already punished for. Goodell is going to stand by his cover of not seeing the video until it hangs him, and the Baltimore front office is going to get called out for dropping a player that was overpaid for his production last year in a league where running backs are getting cheaper.
I'm expecting Rice to be playing for the Raiders by week 7 and Goodell to be gone by then. 9/11/2014 12:17:16 PM

^ You know nobody is going to pick up Rice for a year...probably two at the minimum. I honestly can't see anyone ever picking him up unless he somehow regains a positive public perception...which I just don't know how that's possible.
Vick was out of the league for two years (a lot of that time spent in jail) and it took a lot for someone to take a flier on him. And he was in a position of need. Good running backs are a dime a dozen...why would you waste time on one that will alienate a large portion of your fans?? 9/11/2014 12:31:30 PM

The league was scared of Vick because of the gambling that goes along with dogfighting, not because they ever gave a shit about animal cruelty. The media spun it to be about animal lovers.
Besides, 97% of Oakland fans assume the bitch had it coming, and they will desparately need a running back by week 4. 9/11/2014 4:12:06 PM

so you were... attempting to poke holes in a hashtag set that contains women describing how their abusive partners kept them around via abuse, followed by describing how they eventually decided to leave? There's no false binary here, it's people sharing anecdotes, such as "I stayed because I didn't realize he was emotionally abusing me, I left when I eventually did [realize]." I mean I get it if you're saying that because it can be dangerous leave abusive relationships maybe #whyileft leads one to believe that it's easier to leave than it is, but that didn't seem to be your argument. It's still just real, individual stories, and it's not presenting some kind of logical argument that calls for deconstruction. 9/11/2014 4:25:06 PM

He sucked last year and he's almost 30. The lifespan of an NFL running back on average is like 2 seasons. He's done, and it's not because he cold cocked his girl, it's because he's nearly washed up.

They aren't 'justifying' or making excuses. They're trying to create awareness of the realities of abuse. Which, make no mistake, as proven by the collection of quotes a few posts up, is highly lacking.

oy vey, it's not doing that man. That's what the people quoted above from deadspin are doing. "She's still with him, so it's obviously all chill!!!" this is telling those people, "this is why I couldn't just leave," which shows other victims that they aren't crazy and aren't alone.

My problem with slacktivism is that 99% of the time the results are not tangible. Its way to easy for someone to post something get a bunch of likes and then feel good about the difference that they're making. #kony2012

a group of rich attention-seeking white kids making a movie telling people fuck this kony guy an ocean away with hashtags is about as far as you can get from victims of abuse sharing their actual stories in attempt to reach out to other victims of abuse, some of whom do in fact use twitter. "even if its only in the smallest way." I'm sure many of them also help in other ways, so I'm not sure what the problem is. This isn't a hippie outside whole foods trying to save the whales, this is actual people who have been abused, and you're the one to decree that what they're doing is useless? #SILENCEABUSEVICTIMSTODAY

Don't get me wrong, I think awareness is important and helps ESPECIALLY in domestic abuse or sexual abuse more so than an international crisis, BUT I think your average person trades 'slacktivism' (i hate this term and 'edutainment' ) for likes and a sense of making a difference. That's all I'm saying. I'm willing to bet that the majority of people who post about this only do so once and only because of a story in the media. This is a real life issue for many people worldwide all year. I think its condescending to cram that into a 144 character message that you send one time and then never post about the issue again.
Why isn't anyone calling for abusers to speak out about how they changed their ways, got help, learned to control their frustration? They don't want to be shamed? get the fuck out of here.
Its all bullshit to make people feel better.

My response to all this is basically all the classic old school stuff people used to say when they were looking the other way on their abusive neighbor.
But it really is their business. And some couples get drunk and fight in public--it's what they do. Plus, I dunno...fighting is only exciting when there's a possibility you might get hit back.
