Bingo, that and a huge part of their disciplinary policy has been collectively bargained, I'm not even sure they can suspend people just for being charged with a crime.
Ray Rice was never even prosecuted, that should be a much bigger issue than how many games the NFL suspended him for. The prosecutors who saw this and allowed him to avoid trial and any meaningful punishment deserve to be canned far more than the commissioner of a sports league.
Ray Rice did a shitty thing and should have served some jail time. It would have then been very easy to suspend him or not allow him back in the league depending on how the team's and league felt. They shouldn't be responsible, nor is it desirable, for them to operate as the first layer of punishment for charges of criminal conduct.
The FiveThirtyEight graph is correct, players being high profile is what makes it seem like there is a higher incident of crime. It's not unlike all the reports of child abduction and "stranger danger" despite kidnapping being just as rare, if not more so, as ever. 9/20/2014 7:05:35 PM
