Whoa, whoa, whoa...

At no point did I demonstrate ignorance of how to use order of operations in a simple math problem.

I would easily pass your shitty math class, hey now, and I'd be a real know-it-all bitch about it, too.

i suck as a math teacher. when trying to help my kid with 3rd grade math homework i would try to explain it using 7th grade math which was not very helpful.

all you got to do is divide both sides of both sides of the equation by 3!

In order for more than one number to be included in the numerator or denominator of a division operation they would need to be placed in parentheses.

Like (2+1)/(2*3) vs 2+1/2*3

So in this case for the answer to be 1 the equation would have to read 6/(2(1+2))=1

You say

"I'm doing my mathematics homework right now."

Not

"i'm doing my mathematic homework right now"

So the shortened for is "maths" not "math"

This is one of the dumbest things I've read ITT. I don't think anyone, mentally, is going, "six times one half is 3", instead it's "six divided by 2 is 3" though neither is more difficult than the other, but the way it is written in any shape or form is (1/2). Pairing math down to basics of MDAS, you really only have M & A, with division being derived from multiplication of fractions and subtraction being addition of negatives. Thus in the most basic form is 6*(0.5)*(1+2) (maybe my typing of 1/2 erks you, I'll instead use the decimal form to adhere to the most basic form).

^^^I don't care if you use 1/2 or 0.5. Neither is necessary. Why do you want to add an extra step to an easy math problem?

^^that video is fucking stupid

it says the "Order of Operations" as it is taught in schools would give you 8-2+1 = 5 because PEMDAS says add before you subtract

but when i was taught "order of operations" we were taught that multiplication and division were both done at once from left to right and addition and subtraction were done at once from left to right. if the teacher left that out, then you can't blame order of operations, just the teacher.

i mean, i kind of agree with the video's point that it's stupid to teach this mechanical order of operations method that replaces real understanding of how math works with a cookbook recipe for getting the correct answer, but you can't blame PEMDAS just because it wasn't taught right or you fucked it up.

my teacher always wrote it out as PE(MD)(AS)

the order of operations isn't wrong, it's just not the best way to learn math if you want a true understanding of math.

[no]

Can you think of another example where you take the last letter of a word and add it to the end of the shortened version for no good reason?

You don't shorten refrigerator to fridger. Or Ammunition to ammon. Laboratory doesn't become Laby. So why would you add the last letter of mathematics to the end of the a shortened version of that word? Unless you're trying to preserve a plurality or something, but mathematics isn't plural so there's no reason to add an s. You don't say my favorite subject are mathematics, you say my favorite subject is mathematics. Therefore with no reason to pluralize the singular mathematics into multiple maths, and no other example of a word that I can think of to re-add the last letter of a word to its shortened version, the s simply shouldn't be there.

There are lots of places where the Brits say things differently from Americans and they can make claims that their way is correct and our way isn't, but this is most definitely not one of those times. There is no logical reason to say maths at all.

again. left to right or right to left should not make a difference

1 +(-2) + 8 = 7

oh, wait, I just saw the phrase "last letter"

Quote :
"Can you think of another example where you take the last letter of a word and add it to the end of the shortened version for no good reason?"

I thought my remark seemed pretty reasonable before that.

Umm...it seems "mathematics" was originally a plural

Quote :
"Origin
late 16th century: plural of obsolete mathematic ‘mathematics,’ from Old French mathematique, from Latin (ars) mathematica ‘mathematical (art),’ from Greek mathematike (tekhne ), from the base of manthanein ‘learn.’"

https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=mathematics+etymology

so the Brits are preserving the plural (even though it's obsolete).

Also, the rest of the English-speaking world says "maths" too; it's not just the British. Also, their form precedes ours, and it was sure as fuck correct speech before the term "math" appeared in the U.S.

In my book, there ain't a goddamned thing wrong with "maths."
