So yeah, many of the homeless here in DC do in fact work. But due to certain factors (job that pays less than a living wage, medical problems, no transportation other than public, felonies precluding them from renting an apartment, just generally down one their luck, etc...) they cannot afford a 1 bedroom apartment which will run you about $1G at least.

Shit, just last year a family was living in a shelter, and their daughter went missing. They still haven't found that girl. They found the guy they thought was responsible for her abduction though, in a park with a self inflicted gunshot wound to the noggin.

Most homeless people are invisible. I've had students that were homeless and I would've never know if they hadn't have disclosed it to me. It does bother me though when I'm minding my own business and I'm accosted by an entitled bum demanding change/cash. Sorry dude, I work like 60+ hours a week and I got bills to pay. I've seen you on the same corner for 5+ years and you don't look any worse off, so go fuck yourself or get a job.
