Yeah I don't know much about him, but a few months ago (maybe when his album came out?) a bunch of folks on twitter were talking about him a lot. Just listening to a few songs on youtube, seems pretty good

I was recently made to listen to both Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson.
If more popular country music sounded like that, I might actually listen to country stations when flipping through in the car. Best "modern" country I've heard in a while. 10/30/2014 10:37:03 AM |

Sturgill is opening for Isbell next week at the DPAC. I'll be in attendance.
Cory Branan, Sturgill Simpson, Justin Townes Earle, Hayes Carll, etc these are all good examples of artists trying to keep the original sound of country music alive today.

Me three! I'm so excited!!
I'm taking my mom because NeuseRvrRat is a fartknocker and doesn't want to go. She randomly saw Sturgill Simpson on Conan a few weeks ago and then called me the next day saying she found this "new, upcoming artist that sings real country music" that I should check out. She said he sounded like a smoother Waylon but looked like a Duck Dynasty dude. I laughed and told her she was way behind the times and that she would actually see him in concert with Isbell. She was pleasantly surprised when he was on Fallon this week looking a lot cleaner.

I concur on all accounts and add American Aquarium, Turnpike Troubadours, John Moreland, John Fullbright, Corb Lund, Ray Wylie Hubbard, etc
I saw American Aquarium and Justin Townes Earle at the Carolina Theatre last month and both were awesome. BJ from American Aquarium is especially fun to see in concert or follow on facebook and Twitter because he'll go on rants regarding the state of today's "county" music. In the past few years, both Florida Georgia Line and Chase Rice were opening acts for AA.10/31/2014 7:33:22 PM |

I saw that same show in Rocky Mount, VA the night before. BJ is sober now. Good for him.
Last time I saw turnpike troubadours, the same could not be said for evan felker. He was completely out of it. 10/31/2014 8:16:26 PM |

That song is absolute trash. And I mentioned earlier in the thread that, of some of the newer artists, I kinda like Justin Moore. But if this song is any indication of the type of music he'll make in the future, I'll take that statement back 11/3/2014 8:23:43 PM |

I really liked the new (old) song by The Band Perry...I think they're definitely a different breed of artist than what we're talking about in this thread. They really did a good job with Gentle On My Mind.
I also liked Jennifer Nettles' bit with the Doobie Brothers.

Still just as ornery on stage though. Never change, BJ! I'll be seeing them in Boone in a couple weeks followed by the annual Thanksgiving show in Winston at Ziggy's. Also got a big group going to the Album Release show at Lincoln on 1/30.
Haven't seen Turnpike live yet, but they are on my short list if they ever come anywhere close to NC. Tonight will be my 4th or 5th time seeing Jason Isbell11/6/2014 8:29:57 AM |

Agreed. They did that song justice. But it's part of the formula for country music awards. Next year they will be doing a crossover with Beiber, and some other new up and coming band will be singing a Hank Williams tribute song.11/6/2014 9:44:36 AM |

Pretty sure the new Luke Bryan song "Kick The Dust Up" deserves to be on this list.

I'm going to the Luke Bryan concert this September. My wife is a fan and I got her tickets for Mothers Day. I was like "You don't have to take me if you don't want to. I'll stay at home and watch the kids." I give her hell all of the time about her music. Country concerts are still enjoyable even if I hate the music. 6/17/2015 9:22:49 AM |

I actually don't mind some of the bro-country stuff, but Luke Bryan probably produces the worst of the bro-country music.
Each single he releases is either a decent traditional country song or one of the worst bro-country songs of the year. Not much middle-ground with him. 6/17/2015 10:13:22 AM |
rjrumfel All American 23027 Posts user info edit post |
Traditional? There isn't shit about Luke Bryan that is traditional. Jason Aldean? I can see some of his older stuff being considered traditional.

Haha, I'd say early Luke Bryan is more traditional than most of what Jason Aldean has put out.
"We Rode In Trucks", "Tacklebox", "You Make Me Want to", "Drink a Beer", "Play It Again", "Do I", all of those are solid more traditional songs that I wouldn't lump into bro-country. There are more but those were the first that came to mind. I also give him credit for "Good Directions" by Billy Currington since he wrote that one too.
But for each of those songs you have one of his other terrible songs. "That's My Kind Of Night", "Country Girl", "Kick The Dust Up", etc. 6/17/2015 1:42:47 PM |
