Surge pricing isn't about them being greedy, it's about incentivizing enough drivers to hit the road on at a given time to meet the demand. It's why you can get a Uber reliably in a reasonable time vs a taxi where you call on a busy night and it's who knows

Not that this is any surprise, but the idea that a shitload of cab companies will be on strike tonight is complete bullshit.

Charleston was eight or nine times the normal fair. Wife's friends were in town from New York and we went out to dinner downtown. It cost them $25 to get downtown at 8 pm and $200+ to get back at the end of the night. No worries for them because they're fucking loaded...but I don't know what I would have done. We took a $25 pedicab home.

I don't think it is greedy and wrong to incentivize independent contractors to come in to work during a period of high demand, especially on holidays. Many companies offer employees holiday pay of 1.5 or 2 times the normal amount, in that case showing up is usually still compulsory. Uber drivers make their own schedule so in order to get them out on a busy Holiday night to deal with a bunch of drunks they are gonnna wanna get paid.

most cabs do that, otherwise they get fucked when traffic is bad

[Edited on January 2, 2015 at 10:21 AM. Reason : also it makes sure they get paid for taking you by cook-out if you so demand]

I didn't bother with getting a cab on Wednesday night, I just wheeled around on my stolen Trek bicycle.

Cost $28 for 6 of us to get downtown and $58 for 7 of us to get back. Pretty happy with those prices.

I don't have a problem with surge pricing. I assume most drivers don't either.

What if uber solved the problem by giving drivers the option of accepting a lower surge multiplier??

I don't, either, but there's a difference between providing incentives to the workforce and gouging the consumer. Uber does the latter.
