The Germans just said "Stay the fuck out of British waters, everybody. We're torpedoing all ships in British waters."

And then some Americans went into British waters anyway

Still reading Devil in the White City, but I started reading a book of short stories in between at times when I didn't feel I had time to devote to reading a chapter in my main book. Ended up finishing that book of short stories tonight. Very quick read. It has gotten a lot of praise over the years and, while I enjoyed parts of it, I also thought it read fairly pretentious at times as well. Still worth the read.

I fucking loved Infinite Jest while I was reading it, but was left somewhat disappointed and nonplussed by the ending. Looking around on the 'net, I see a lot of the questions I had about the ending are actually addressed within the book, but a lot of these details slipped past me on my first reading. I rarely reread books, but I may reread this one eventually (not any time soon, however). Still, highly recommended!

^I've only read one of them (Use of Weapons) about 10 years ago, but I remember really enjoying it. I've also read The Algebraist and The Wasp Factory by Banks, but I don't think either of those are Culture novels (maybe The Algebraist is, but obviously not The WF). I almost changed my mind and started reading Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami next, but after your comment I decided to stick with Banks.

May I suggest Wolf in White Van by the band Mountain Goat's singer/songwriter/guitarist/pianist? I just finished it and though it was really good. It's probably even better if you were into games like D&D (which I was not, but it was still neat).
