Because buildings were looted and burned. I think that help qualifies as a riot.

When the frenchies start burning down the mosques and start looting the 7 Allah 11, then we can call them rioters as well.

The French government has done more to welcome and assimilate these Muslims than any other non-Muslim country. If you are calling them bigots for that, then I'm not sure I'm fully aware of the definition of bigot.

What has all that assimilation got them? Well, 12 murders at the least.

Not respecting the Muslim religion?

You'll have to break this down for me, because i"m just obviously an idiot. The French government allows the Muslim communities to practice their own religious law. How is that not respect for the Muslim religion?

Are you talking about the magazine that was attacked? Of course a satirical publication isn't going to respect the Muslim religion, or Buddhists, or Christians. Those are everywhere those, not just in France.

The French people are actually known for the bigotry, separately from this incident, but I have never experienced this first-hand.

I'm sure you all remember a few years ago all the riots in France because of the immigrant slums the gov was basically running?

There's more going on here than "errmegherrd terroists!!!"

Europe's relationship to Islam is not something us Americans can easily fathom. It's more like how we treat Mexicans, but a lot worse.

Everyone claims to be for multiculturalism until the other cultures start to actually have influence, at which point they begin demanding that something be done. It's like people think that immigrants coming from oppressive countries are just going to embrace Western philosophy and join the progressive cause of the day.

I don't claim to be any expert at all on French society, but from what I have read most "ghettos" of France are populated by Muslims. Poor and uneducated. This is the root of their problem. Imagine how easy it is to pull a young, disenfranchised Muslim into radicallizism in that environment.

On the other hand, when you start treating immigrants like shit, they give no fucks about treating you like shit back. It's like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Are french immigrants assholes because the french are assholes, or do they come in that way and never moderate?

That's why Canada probably has the best relations with immigrants.

Speaking of Liberty

The French are obviously way more free than us because if something comparable to this shit was ever published in the USA you would have fucking lawsuits for hate speech, Federal Hate Crime, Civil Suits for wrongful employment discrimination (doubtful the co ever hired a Muslim and they could have one apply and get denied just to file suit and orchestrate something)

Of course this publication was released prior to the violent retaliation, which is tragic and unjustified. However, I do believe that this publication was offensive to many people and would have been classified as hate speech in the USA for portrayals of violent acts.

I mean shit, don't we have someone going to the Supreme Court right now because his rap music was too offensive in the lyrics? Speech has limits, and this Hebdo shit wouldn't pass USA 1st Amendment but it was cool in France I guesss

^ and one more thing

the exact reason why USA would categorize this as hate speech (if such a publication was running shit like this) was to prevent incitement of violence, which apparently happens when you illustrate death and destruction and say things like "the Quran can't stop bullets"

I do not support violence or death on either front. I am actually just saying America is better equipped to handle something like this before it escalates because the Muslim groups could sue the shit out of a publisher if they released something like that and get an injunction based on it being incitement speech calling for violence against religious groups.

I would imagine a lot of muslim immigrants move to western countries specifically to escape religious fundamentalism and theocratic regimes.

But i have no idea.

It used to be for years and years, Atheists were the most hated religious group, but recently Muslims have taken this crown:
http://www.pewforum.org/2014/07/16/how-americans-feel-about-religious-groups/

The situations is pretty dire for them... they need to reach out more. They need to have cultural festivals and things like that, they need to have muslims portrayed on TV doing good things, they need muslims talking about how Islam saved their life and stopped them from being alcoholic.

Yes, and then there is the opposite case too--religious Muslims who escape Muslim countries run by secular/military dictators where they are suppressed/oppressed and they can practice and propagate their religion better in Western countries.

However, those are adults we are talking about. But what about children who had no say in moving to western countries, those who moved as children with their parents, and the millions who were born there? Those are like dice, some turn out modern, get advanced education, and integrate, but many are disenfranchised (in France, UK, Germany) and they start paying attention to extreme imams and elements, become radicalized, see West as their enemy because it attacks Muslim/Arab countries, and a small percentage eventually become terrorists.

In the past, this has worked out fairly well. The Irish, Poles, Jews, various kinds of Slav, and certain types of Italian were all oppressed as shit, and they got on the "Western philosophy and progressive cause" train pretty fast. No doubt the Chinese and Japanese would have, if we'd let them.

So the one thing you got right here is "disenfranchised." Studies tend to refute the "poor, uneducated terrorist" theory. More often, your terrorist is moderately- to well-educated. They're probably well above subsistence or even real poverty relative to their situation. The problem is that they feel disenfranchised and prevented from reaching their full potential due to what they perceive as an outside force.

Uh, yea that's a reasonable expectation. People coming from oppressive countries choose to move to a particular country because they place value on the very ideals that make them less oppressive. You want to come to America for a better life? Well one of the reasons you have the opportunity for a better life here is because we generally have a well established freedom of speech and separation of religion and state. These fuckers want nothing more than to have the best of both worlds - they want a peaceful nation with a great economy that submits to their bullshit religion.

I'm not saying immigrants should be treated anything less than any other citizen just for the sake of it - but if you come here and feel like you can change the very culture that made this place attractive to you in the first place, go fuck yourself.

I wonder what this is going to take for people to stop viewing this as an annoyance and to start viewing it as what it really is - a war of civilizations that will not just go away.
