I see the same concept all over. Minimal barriers to entry always provide huge incidental benefits. I agree that nothing should be advertised as "free" and expect to maintain its purity.
As one illustration, in your typical office building:

If the front desk has a nominal "sign-in" sheet where the security guard makes minimal effort and asks you to sign the front registry before entering the building, it is a huge deterrent and serves as a major barrier to outside people wandering in.

education isn't a hobby

the act of going to class implies that you want to be there, free or not

I hate being the last post on a page...

Quote :
"Also, back in the day, I used to go to a pool hall in Cary that charged for a membership. This wasn't some elite pool players club or anything like that. The membership was $1, and you had to sign your name and give your license number (I think, been over 10 years). I thought that anything that costs $1 isn't exclusive or really even meaningful, so I asked the owner what it was for. He said it was to keep shitty people out of his bar, because shitty people aren't going to go through the effort of signing up for anything.

I think the same kind of thing applies here. Even paying the low costs of community college tuition ensures in some small amount that the people that are there actually want to be there, because they're paying for it.

You haven't had much experience with hobos wandering around your establishments, have you?

At my old office we had a guy who would walk in the building in full military garb and battle helmet. People shrugged it off, but I was seriously bothered by it. Front desk stepped up security.

So without much more detail, yes, people do voluntarily go places sometimes without explanation and minimal barriers should be maintained.

for tgl, a better example, one with less vitriol. I think I spelled that right.

I'm sure lots of people would sign up and go, if it became free. They would all have really good intentions. But after a while, they'll get tired of doing homework. They'll get tired of getting up early. They don't have any real skin in the game, so they'll just stop going if they get the least bit bored.

The eternal tension of where society should place dividing barriers and
where society should open the doors to become more inclusive
will never be resolved.

One of the biggest problems is in education in general. The people making the money are the ones who should be teaching, but they don't have time to teach.

There are a lot of sick fucks and chester molesters out there running training and certification programs, and there's a lot of fraud in the industry. The programs aren't incentivized to bring the right talent to training the next generations who are, in good faith, attempting to live a better life.

I think the policy decision is in the right place, but rather than be selfish politically, this type of federal policy should be a legislative act that should be a matter of state concern because the local jurisdictions are better equipped to enhance their specific training programs.

I do agree that for most people there needs to be something between high school and college to allow people a better chance to figure out what they enjoy. Even if its mandatory 2 years at community college first taking a varied course load to help adjust.

I see some Fed Govt grant funds coming NC State's way for bridging this gap!

Quote :
"The First Year College (FYC) is the "college of options" for students entering NC State University. Established in 1995, FYC has developed a nationally-recognized model for successfully advising students through their first year at the university. From personal, one-on-one academic and career advising to our two-semester orientation course and our living-learning community, FYC provides a comprehensive experience for first year students who want to choose the right major and graduate on time."

Just another handout that doesn't actually address the problem. The democrats know that it won't go anywhere. They just need to be able to say "Look at these republicans who kept all y'all from getting FREE community college education. Vote for us and we'll give you free edumacations that will solve all your problems!"

Republicans used to be on the forefront of CC reform and improvement, since businesses kept complaining there was a dearth of skilled workers for them to hire. At least McCrory and some other NC GOP was hitting that pretty hard last year. Its basically a subsidy to business, having the state train your skilled workers instead of having to spend money to develop a training program yourself.

But republicans will now oppose this, but only because Obama proposed it.

This really isn't a new concept. Early colleges have been around for over a decade now, offering basically the same thing to high school students. There was one built in my hometown years ago, and to my knowledge they don't have any issues with too many students wanting to get in.

Making college free doesn't mean that EVERYONE will go.

What about Georgia's program. I haven't read up in detail on it, but I know that if you make certain grades in HS, you can basically get a free university education that isn't really scholarship based.

Anybody here taken advantage of it or know more about it?

i have no problem with free community college (especially when you consider the potential of online classes)...i'm also fine with my taxes going up to help pay for it

the stipulation should be that they have to make certain grades, though...GPA below a certain level and your school is no longer free (you can still continue, though, you just have to pay for it yourself)

That's the stipulation with this program as well. You have to maintain a 2.5 GPA. But once established, this program could be twisted to fit the will of whoever implements it.

Ignorance such as this is just simply astounding... We don't repay our national debt and the world stops lending us money, and then our beloved welfare state collapses, like it did in Greece.

I think that comes from lottery money and I am pretty sure you have to have a 3.0+ in high school to qualify.

Education solved all of my problems. One of the things I was educated on was hard work and focus. So I took my BA in English and my MA in something even less "useful" and I got a job at a Fortune 500 company. I love my job and I'm doing really well there. I use every skill I developed in college on a daily basis.

Anybody who says more education is a bad thing is either an idiot or a fucking devil.

Huh??? removing interest from the loans without changing anything else will inflate the bubble how???? If the government wants to give everyone free college, why do they need to make a profit on student loans? Welfare should be fore everyone.

Loan standards stay the same, interest goes to 0 and that's going to cause problems how? You are stupid.

We are going to loan out the same amount, the government will just stop making 40+ billion a year on interest since they want to give everyone free college. Its only fair.
