When you consider how far up that came from, that's a pretty spectacular showing (in a good way) for SpaceX.

Looks like different control algorithms could have saved the landing, it'll be interesting to hear what SpaceX has to say.

One of the engineers tweeted that there was a sticky valve, which is a common thing, but the precision involved in sticking a landing like this is beyond the "normal" precision necessary... Elon Musk tweeted it would be an easy fix (and at the same time every engineer collectively said "ah shit... lots extra overtime the next few weeks")

Space X is planning an attempt to land the first stage on land! During the Jason-3 launch on July 22nd, they will attempt to return the first stage and land it at the SLC-4 landing site - the former Titan II pad.

They terminated the flight (auto-destruct)... looks like the vehicle was starting to come apart... some people thought they saw the Dragon capsule come off the stack (still too early to know for sure)

To me it looks like the separation sequence fired to blow the capsule off the end of the stack. That of course caused the rocket to lose its shit and have to be destroyed.

The last russian mission to resupply the ISS ended in failure as well.
As did a previous supply mission by Orbital.

all 3 of these have been very recent.

it looks like there was a structural failure in the second stage... you can see a plume of liquid oxygen the first stage flies through before range safety terminated the flight. could have been a tank that lost pressure or ruptured, but again we will know in the coming days.

a lot of speculation (and that's all it is, and hold no water) is around this piece of equipment that was being transported in the "trunk" (unpressurized area under the capsule)...
