LOL yeah I can't take it back now.

I just know that from experimenting with very low carb, I had a difficult time passing. Carbs absorb water to facilitate passage.

remember weight loss != health.

i looked and felt better at 210, than i have at 195. and ive also been bad at 210....


I lost a hell of a lot of weight, best health wise was when i reduced my calories, and exersized regularly... Starving yourself will only end up with you looking like your starving.

I am eating adequate amounts of food for what I'm trying to do. My doctor says I'm fine. I feel fine, I have plenty of energy and get as much or more exercise than most.

6-800 calories a day does sound pretty damn low especially if you arent like a 120 lb girl. Seems like a way to lose weight quickly but doesnt sound very sustainable. I would imagine your body would become in a constant state of mild starvation after a while and as soon as you jumped the calorie intake up its gonna wanna pack on the weight quickly. Clearly I am no nutritionist though only going off what sounds reasonable haha.

Not generally correct. Eat refined carbs (white bread, pasta, cereal, rice) and it will make you constipated as hell. Fiber (especially soluble fiber) holds water, not the carbs.

When I went on paleo, I was eating loads of vegetables and nuts, so that helped. And even though my fiber intake was reduced from before the paleo diet due to the lack of beans and whole grain pasta/bread/cereal, I still did not have any trouble as far as bowel movements are concerned. I surmise that is because of my massive fat intake on the paleo (125-150 grams). (plus of course some fiber from nuts, vegetables, and fruits)

Status check: Just paid $1.29 for a bunch of cilantro. I'm happy to have some on hand for the next week+, but if I end up composting it I won't be upset.

Is anyone who was paying through the nose for this stuff 2+ years ago still paying through the nose for it?

I keep a large mason jar in my fridge with some water in it and put my bunches of cilantro, basil, and green onion in it just to have on hand. The cilantro and basil will keep for 2 weeks that way. The green onion is probably closer to a month for the stalks and pretty much infinite for the bulbs. You'll want to change the water out every so often.

Also, if you go to an Asian grocery store, all of the above is dirt fucking cheap. You can also get a little bit more mileage out of the cilantro if you put a ziplock over the leafy part in addition to the stalks being in the jar, but I rarely do this.

We stopped a while ago, but I think it's even way more popular now. I've actually got several foodie friend couples (they both work together at a local high end restaurant) who do it and rave about it. To their credit, I think it's gotten a lot better since my wife and I tried it out (and it was pretty good when we did it).

I think these companies are doing pretty well, but I haven't done any research to support it. Just general observations from people talking about it and increased advertising from several different companies.

Such a waste of plastic. I hope you guys enjoy your meals while the ocean gets dumped with more plastic. Not everything gets recycled.

^ That did bother us when we did it. I know they've gotten better with their packaging...but there's no way that it's not a huge waste in the garbage sector.

we did our first meal from Blue Apron tonight. i was very happy with it.

i consider it a luxury sort of service and i don't mind paying more for someone doing the planning and shopping for me. however, i think overall, we'll end up saving money. it'll definitely help me consume less calories.

for one thing, it's cheaper than take out, which was an easy out for us when the "what's for dinner?" question came up every afternoon. my wife just isn't much of a cook. her parents can't cook for shit and she never learned. she can follow a recipe if it spells everything out. she doesn't mind cooking, but she doesn't like the meal planning. i am a pretty good cook, but i'm just not willing to take care of it every night. i also really hate going to the grocery store. all this adds up to us doing a lot of takeout.

there are absolutely ways to cook the same or better meals for less money. no doubt about that. but we would never do it. for us, this is a good option. we have disposable income and get to enjoy variety that we would never come up with on our own. we'll also eat a lot healthier. even if i don't save money, i'm ok with it. if nothing else, we can do it for a while and end up with a book full of recipes that we already know we like. i'm not saying it's a good option for everyone or even a lot of folks, but for us, i think it's going to work.

i'll update after a month or two.

if you give them your email address and then leave the website for a while, they will email you a half off the first week offer, so trying it for one week is a no-brainer. if you wait a week or so, they will offer you $40 off the first month.

i think each week has 8 recipes to choose from. 3 of them are vegetarian. you pick 3. if you're super picky, then, yeah, it probably isn't for you.

3 meals per week. Planning to do it every week unless we have other stuff going on. You choose from 2 or 3 per week, but if you only do 2, then you pay shipping, so the third meal only has an incremental cost of $10.

we cook (or at least make a sandwich or something simple) a few nights a week as it is, so the plan isn't to cook these and do takeout the other nights. the idea is to cook most nights and rarely do takeout.

We did Hello fresh for a few weeks this year. Overall it helped me count calories and keep my intake down (portion control) but it was not cheeper for us, nor was their produce particularly better than anything at the store. We canceled it because they sent us bad or going bad produce more than once, and (although I'm not captain planet) the amount of packaging was just too much.

Correction, we switched to Home Chef not Hello Fresh

Hello Fresh didn't have very many healthy options, but Home Chef let's you do low carb and heart healthy

We've been doing Blue Apron for a month. It's nice and we haven't had a meal we didn't like yet. The main positive for people who like to cook (I don't but she does) seems to be the time saved related to meal planning and shopping for specific ingredients for specific recipes. Now we can keep grocery shopping super basic (eggs, fruits, lunch foods etc.). The other nights of the week we're either eating out or we'll just do breakfast foods, or veggies + rice and a curry sauce, or something very simple.

The only negative is that we have so much going on that we might need to trim it back to 2 meals a week. A couple weeks we have had shows or plays or dinner with friends etc. stack up and we still have a meal left to make and we're getting the next shipment of 3 meals.

Still enjoying the Blue Apron meals and still satisfied with the quality and convenience for the price. My wife and I have learned a lot of recipes and techniques that we use the other 4 nights of the week. The portion control has helped me lose weight.

So how much is Blue Apron/month?

If you don't want to meal plan, http://www.skinnytaste.com has a new meal plan each week, that even includes going out once. She puts all of the recipes out there for you. The only thing you have to do is go to the grocery store.

I guess people don't do this for cost savings.

We do it for the convenience, not cost savings. It's charged weekly and you can skip as needed. So there isn't a 'monthly' cost. $60/week for 3 meals for 2 people (or basically $10/meal)

I guess we've been doing it for about 4 months now? No complaints. 2 times in these 4 months they have forgotten to send us an ingredient. Both times we emailed them and they responded within an hour and gave us general $ credit on the following week's order.

The meals are not bad health-wise either if you don't add salt every time they suggest it. We usually skip that almost entirely and the meals have still been good.

FYI, you can get heat and eat prepared meals for the same or similar price. Check out tastefully-served.com, suppermeals.com, donovansdish.com and probably some others in our area. It looks like catering companies are moving into this market space, so if you're not in this area there is probably someone near you.

i haven't tried supper yet but the other 2 are good. we've built up enough home chef and hello fresh recipes and have orders saved in the harris teeter app so we just do curbside pickup if we want any of those meals and when we don't have time for cooking just do one of the meal services. HT also has prepared meals on weeknights although it's the same menu every week.

whole foods also has prepared meals but you have to get 5 meals per week at $50/person

We've done stuff like that now and then from our local grocer and it's certainly a good option for peopl. For us, we're kind of in the niche where my better half actually really loves to cook but doesnt have a lot of time to choose recipes and shop for the ingredients etc. every week. And I dislike cooking and grocery shopping both. So it works out well for us. She still gets to enjoy actually preparing and cooking 3 meals a week but she can simply come home from work and pick one of the recipes and everything is already in the fridge for her to work with.

See if your grocery store has an app that lets you save recipes, we just pick which recipes we want and as long as we order the day before or early enough in the day we can do curbside pickup at HT.

i don't come within 5 miles of a grocery store on my 13 mile drive between home and work. it's a convenience thing for me. I'm satisfied with what i get for the price and how little effort it requires. my wife passes a harris teeter, so i'll suggest that saved-recipe-pick-up thing to her.

i have started doing the fresh refrigerated heat and eat tray things from HT for lunch at work 2 or 3 times a week. they are pretty good and average about $5. better than going out or eating some junk for lunch.

Since doing Blue Apron every week since Christmas, the only problem we've had was some potatoes that went bad before we cooked that meal. Maybe I was supposed to put them in the fridge. I grabbed some other potatoes I had on-hand and used them instead and didn't bother reporting it to them. I'm sure they would've given me a credit or something. I've still really enjoyed every meal we've had and we've learned a lot of quick and easy ways to make mains and sides. Eaten a lot of things I never would have tried otherwise, too.

Been doing 3 meals per week for a year now. Only had the bad potatoes and one other time when there was a some item missing. We've enjoyed every meal. Learned a lot of techniques and tried new ingredients that we've used to cook on non-Blue Apron nights. we hardly ever eat out or do takeout now. it's been an important part of my weight loss. everyone i've given free meals to has loved it. the only hangup anyone ever has is the price. worth it to me for the convenience.

Glad you're still enjoying it. We're coming up on a year now with very few complaints. It's just become our norm. It has mostly all tasted good to me. But she's a good from-scratch cook anyway (we just don't have a lot of time to do that) and has enjoyed it so that tells me something.

At one point they switched delivery companies and the new company was coming in the evening, when we have an apartment office that is closed. Luckily the fedex driver called us directly because he knew it was perishable and we were able to get the package from him directly as opposed to him dropping it off in the apartment package area for us to pick up the following day(which means evening since we're both gone before the office opens). Since then our office has switched to those 24 hour parcel lockers which alleviated this issue.
